It's a bit more complicated than that. His fans, the few genuine ones he has, look up to him as a role model of sorts. Someone who can say what they think and act how they want to act. That's why they support him. He, on the other hand, believes that the money he gets is because of his great content. This is why he feels justified to mistreat his audience when they don't support him enough or do something he doesn't like. How dare they not pay for or distract from the great content they receive. A charismatic person wouldn't insult his supporters every chance he gets. He'd also have no issue pretending to be something he isn't for the sake of a benefit - something Phil refuses to do. Finally, his relationship with his fans seems to be more akin to domestic violence victims, where the victim simply doesn't know any better. His fans, much like himself, don't like change and are content to keep doing what they've been doing despite the abuse. Surely you can't say that they keep crawling back to him because he is so charismatic.

I believe that Phil has OCD grooming habits related to anxiety. When he's in front of a camera you notice that he's playing with his beard, digging in his ears, or gnawing on his fingernails. I think he's just plucked too many hairs to keep up the facial hair. If he was smart, he'd just shave that shit off and make sure that he doesn't move to pluck out the side of his head.

IIRC, he's done it once or twice before, usually says more or less the same thing that he did yesterday. Yeah, online video diagnosis is fraught with low qualification perils to take just at face value.
