Even if it was for sympathy, he probably does sincerely want to stop. The question is if he wants it more than he wants that rock, which I'm less certain of.
I've seen people suddenly quit, and I've seen people smoke until they burn their lungs up and die, could go either way imo.

I do something similar when casually chatting with friends, but bossman is particularly egregious
