I didn't watch ID4 when it first came out ... Which is kind of a shame, because I was the perfect age for that movie when it came out (I was more about the Men In Black hype back in the day, though). I didn't see ID4 for the first time until I was much older. I think I finally saw it in 2009 or 2010-ish?
The movie is fun, but it's not a favorite of mine or anything. However, it's my husband's all-time favorite popcorn movie, and I have fun when I watch it with him because it makes him so genuinely happy and giddy, haha. I can see why people love it though, especially if they saw it when they were kids. I know a lot of fellow millennials who view ID4 as a comfort movie, and, yeah, I get it. I can understand not loving ID4, but I don't think the movie warrants hate or anger. It's just a fun little alien invasion movie with some charismatic actors in it.
I do remember some movie snobs in the 90s dunking on it when it came out though. Critics did NOT like it back in the day. Perhaps that's where Mike's mindset is with it. Meh.
That said, ID4 is practically Citizen fucking Kane compared to the kind of slop we see getting released today for the most part.
