Might be the council. In the article it is mentioned that the traffic lights turn rather quickly. We have that in my area too and it's dangerous as hell, they expect pedestrians to be able to sprint across the road, apparently. If that's what happened that is horrific, because the guy in the car may have had a green light and never saw it coming.
The lights might have failed; the old man possibly shouldn't have been there; the truck window frame may have obscured the driver's vision, but an attentive driver would not have mown down a pedestrian like that. I hope the useless bastard gets a rotten long jail sentence.
EDIT: Just learned that the dead man was old Tony Cakes, the gangster. Don't know what to think now. I wouldn't want to be Mr Trucker when the Sicilians find out though.
