Asterios does not struck me as one of them. He is more of a wannabe. A kid trying to impress the local "cool kids" by doing what they do only to realise that it is not worth it far too late. A normal guy surrounded by bad people and realising he is the only one not charismatic enough to get out of trouble. Just his luck that he is the only one who lost his livelyhood to Maddox.
I remember at one point there was a plan to infiltrate something of known height into one of Dax and/or Ralph's gatherings and measure them directly, possibly with the aid of trigonometric calculations. Obviously I'd condemn any sort of trolling plan but this is more like sending a probe to some distant planet in order to get reliable data to finally resolve a question which many people have speculated on, much like the Soviets sent those probes to Venus.
