Democrats are despairing over President Joe Biden’s debate performance Thursday night, a showing so halting some even privately raised questions about whether he should remain the party’s nominee.

Biden appeared onstage with a soft, halting voice and an open-mouthed, staring look. He struggled to finish thoughts at points, and ceded ground on issues like abortion where Democrats have an edge.

It took just minutes for Democrats to realize how bad it was becoming.

“Biden looks and sounds terrible. He’s incoherent,” one Democrat who spent time working in the Biden administration said.

“Horrific,” said another Democratic operative.

And one Democrat who’s worked on campaigns up and down the ballot said simply: “We are f***ed.”

The looming question as the debate came to a close was almost existential: Should someone else top the Democratic ticket?

“It’s hard to argue that Biden should be our nominee,” said an operative who’s worked on campaigns at all levels for over a decade.

This debate was historic for many reasons, but not least because it is taking place before each man is formally nominated at their respective conventions. The Democratic National Convention is set to convene August 19 in Chicago.

Democrats have spent much of the past year handwringing about Biden’s chances of beating Trump in an election many view as an existential one that will decide the very survival of American democracy. But Biden himself was determined to be the one to take on Trump, at one point even saying directly: “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running.”

No serious Democratic challengers stepped up to run against Biden, and at this point in the campaign he’d have to decide to step aside if Democrats were to pick another nominee. If Biden did withdraw, the Democratic nomination would be decided on the floor.

Democrats were even talking about who it might be instead: “If I was Gavin (Newsom) or Gretchen (Whitmer), I’d be making calls tonight,” one said.

I'm racking my brains trying to think of possible people that the DNC could try to rally around at an open convention that has a _remote_ possibility of beating Trump.

Newsome is out because he won't appeal to anybody in the midwest. This California rich kid will get wiped out by Trump.

Whitmer won't appeal in Pennsylvania they don't vote for women there for big offices. It's a Pennsylvania thing, and it's close to Maine with a high amount of old people. PA has been polling strongly for Trump all year.

Fetterman is more interesting, but the problem there is his health. He has people screaming at him to stop eating donuts and take it easy so he doesn't get another stroke. But he has shown his willingness to get away from the wokies and the commies and can keep Trump from getting enough Midwest states that he needs.

It's a real shitshow for the Democrats.

Fetterman
The problem with Fetterman is that the progressive wing won't allow it. They control a significant amount of delegates at the DNC and hate the center left as much as they hate the Republicans. They would rather lose this election and try again in four years than support a more moderate candidate that would win the general election. As I said before, there is no practical way to get someone the broad Democratic coalition would rally behind. If the progressive wing bent the knee and supported Fetterman, and Fetterman won, it would significantly weaken their position within the party, and they would immediately lose their argument of "we're just not being radical and socialist enough!" for the foreseeable future. Something like that would very likely end the careers of "the Squad." While doing all of this would be beneficial to their party, and likely country, as a whole, it would be detrimental to their personal aims, and therefore won't do it.

How would Hitmer perform in Arizona or Georgia? If Trump wins those two (which is an ask, given the 2020 fuckery which still hasn't really been solved) he only needs one of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan or Nevada (I think) to cinch the election

Arizonans probably won't know or care about her COVID buffoonery, but recent developments in Georgia (the voter backlash against Stacy Abrahms, etc) she has no shot of winning GA. And DeSantis will pop up and attack her on COVID so she can't try a 3-pointer and shoot for trying at a state with a lot of electors like FL to make up for it. She might get Ohio.

She has the "wine mom Karen" factor but that is not an advantage in this election year.

I think we are seeing the start of the death rattle for the DNC as a major political party, at least as we've known it. It has become too fractured, too divided. You've got the old school moderates (who are a dying breed), the Corpo-crats in bed with major corporations, the forever war-hawks in bed with the MIC, and the Pinko Commie radicals. And recently there has been more and more driving wedges between all the factions. The conflict between the Izzies and Palestinians is a prime example of one of the catalysts driving a dagger into the heart of the DNC. And they've played so many games, gotten into bed with so many groups, pandered to so many special interests, all while betraying those who used to be their core base, that now they can't do anything right. No matter what they say or do they are going to alienate someone and drive away voters.

The thing about rigging elections is that you can't do it by cheating alone. You need to still have enough legitimate votes to make up the bulk of it so that you only have to cheat enough to tip the balance in your favor. The Dems are losing their shit because it has become clear that they're likely not going to win this, even with all their "election fortification" and 24/7 spin and propaganda in the news cycle. They have fucked things up too horribly for themselves this time and alienated too many voters. They can't make excuses for Biden anymore or claim that footage is "cleverly edited" and taken out of context like they have been for the past 18 months any time Biden has a senior moment or shits his depends. Everyone saw a feeble, dottering old man no longer in possession of his faculties on that stage. And in typical DNC fashion, they will neither take responsibility, admit blame, or try to find an effective solution to their problems. They'll just continue on denying reality, attacking with name calling and cheap muckraking, and spitting out lies like they were a mouthful of poison.

As someone who supports Biden:
Yeah he dropped both Hiroshima and Nagasaki on stage tonight. This is fucking depressing :lossmanjack: Granted, Trump was not better with his delusional ramblings that became evident towards the end. But fuck me did he flop big time.
You don't have to outrun the lion, you only have to outrun the other guy.

Don't call it a grave.
American politics is basically football for pseudo-intellectuals. At least the football players aren't faking their athletic abilities. Politicians can't even be honest about what they had for dinner.

I don't mean American politics as a whole. Just how it is treated by a lot of people. Obviously politics have more impact on lives than the Superbowl does. The way a lot of people treat it, you'd think they were rooting for a football team.
As an outsider, indeed that's what 'murican politics looks like. To think anything else is just being in denial.

Fetterman has his health and his wife and the fact he just started his 6 year Senate term (and it's not a stressful job) to give up for a shot-in-the-dark hail mary campaign that will likely put heavy stress on him. But: he does have the right background and appeal for the center-left and he is a template to follow for Democrats who want to win purple areas. But I don't think he would go to Chicago to push a floor vote.

There isn't much of a field after him. Literally every name is either a nobody, a COVID Nazi that Trump will destroy, or a FTP commie that now denies that they went nuts over St. Floyd.

The wrong side won that debate. I don't care how sweaty Nixon looked, he had his head right and Kennedy was extremely out of his depth as president.
Tricky Dick got his revenge eventually but it took a fucking decade for him to do it and LBJ fucked everything up in the interim.
All of that is a bunch of malarkey Kennedy cheated to win the 1960 presidential election Nixon used his connections in the Chicago outfit as well as his friend mayor James daily

i can tell you as a criminal myself something like that is too impractical. first rule of crime: have as little people involved in it as possible. stealing an election involves too many moving parts and too many people to shut up

The preparations made it sound as if they stacked the deck firmly in Biden's favor and the old senile fop crashed into the poker table flipped everything over making Trump look good
You could tell that he had been given every single question in advance which means he would have spent weeks rehearsing his answers. His team set the debate rules. He was wearing an ear piece and it seemed like he was checking on a visual cue of some kind during the debate. They no doubt had him hopped up on drugs and had him sleeping 16 hours a day to get ready. Despite all that he was an incoherent, gibbering mess. The fucked up thing is that everyone knows he has dementia and the only thing his supporters cared about was whether he could mask/ cover it up to get through a 90 minute debate without looking like a slavering retard, he couldn't.

What a trainwreck of a debate. Trump won it instantly when he caught Biden drooling out that word salad about "beating Medicare". Of the two, only one can still think on his feet even the slightest bit. Biden was just listening for keywords and then launching into his scripts.
