Josh, .50 BMG for home defense is a meme. Get a 1.2m long pinch bar and try doing drills with it. M82 is almost three times heavier lol.
If you want a shotty, buy Benelli M2 (or M4 for LARP purposes). It's probably the best semi-auto shotgun in the world. Very reliable, easy to maintain, doesn't have cycling issues with weird powder loads (unlike many gas-operated shotguns). Slap an extended mag on her and you're set.
The benelli with bird shot would be insane. Imagine getting blasted over and over with it semi-auto, even if you have body armor it would hit the unprotected bits.
I'm not really experienced with them so much (and idk about the import legality) but a saiga shotgun might be a good alternative to a benelli and has an option for magazines.
I'd disagree. If you use an energy calculator and compare common bullet weights, Hornady 62gr black tip 5.56 vs Hornady 123gr black tip 7.62x39, the 7.62x39 has 15% more energy. I'd say that's enough to make a difference. There are many more examples of guys talking about having to put 5 or more rounds of 5.56 into people when they know if they had something with more ass behind it they would've killed them in 1 or 2 shots.

I've heard Vietnam vets say 7.62x39 was preferable to 5.56x45 when fighting people behind foliage, the faster much smaller 5.56 has a tendency to be thrown off target when going through bushes and branches. Some Americans preferred captured AK platforms in the jungles because of what I just mentioned and the lack of reliability/bad weathering on early m16s
