Rowling said it would change nothing if Hermione was black, and she was correct. And Dumbledore being gay is not quite the rug-pull people seem to think - he's a professor. The professors basically don't have a sexuality because they're teachers and kids don't give a shit about that aspect of their teachers' lives. Does McGonagall have a spouse? Flitwick? Trelawney? No? JK Rowling outed Dumbledore just a couple of months after the last book came out in response to a fan question. She did that back 2007, years before Woke existed. It was hardly out of nowhere given Dumbledore's backstory with Grindlewald.

I feel like it's very much an issue where, to JKR writing the books, Dumbledore was always gay, it was just never really relevant to mention within the text because he's not the main character and his sexuality didn't really have a reason to come up - and to be honest, it would have felt kind of creepy if it had somehow, since the main POV character is a child. But also, until iirc the time the next-to-last book came out, it was literally illegal in the UK to publish material that portrayed homosexuality/homosexuals positively, and her books would not have been published at all if Dumbledore had been stated to be gay in their pages. Since she likely wrote the last two books either before or just as it became legal, it didn't make it into the books.

It's never been an issue of pandering, it's been an intersection of "this element of the character just didn't come up in the books for good reasons" combined with "it would have been illegal to mention it anyway until it was far too late to bring it up."

Nothing says "we are on the right side of history" with contacting a domestic abuser (fuck, he even admit that did it!).

As we all know, anything and everything is completely justified as long as the trans activists are the ones doing it. That's just how they work, they're complete hypocrites. I always read Dumbledore and Grindlewald as gay for each other. I was surprised other people were surprised when he was "outed." I thought it was a weird thing to allude to in a kids' book, but assumed she was just progressive and trying to normalize two guys being in love without being blatant about it.
