US Democrat Says Party Members 'Gaslit' In Private Call About Joe Biden - big donors find out what it's like to be treated with the same contempt that democrats usually reserve for their voters

A Colorado Democrat said his party "gaslit" him and others on a private call about President Joe Biden on Saturday after his dismal presidential debate performance.

Amid mounting concerns about Biden's age and mental acuity, Democrats hoped for a youthful and energetic performance when the president took the CNN debate stage in Atlanta on Thursday night against former President Donald Trump.

However, that hope quickly turned into panic when the 81-year-old rambled through his administration's current accomplishments and goals with a hoarse voice. A Biden aide, meanwhile, told Newsweek late Thursday night that the president was battling a cold during the debate.

On Saturday afternoon, DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison and Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez held a call with dozens of Democratic National Committee (DNC) members from across the country.

Elected DNC member Joe Salazar told the Associated Press on Saturday, "I was hoping for more of a substantive conversation instead of, 'Hey, let's go out there and just be cheerleaders,' without actually addressing a very serious issue that unfolded on American television for millions of people to see."

Salazar continued: "There were a number of things that could have been said in addressing the situation. But we didn't get that. We were being gaslit."

Multiple DNC members who were on the call told AP that they felt as if they were being asked to ignore the severity of Biden's dismal debate performance. Harrison and Rodriguez ignored the issues of Biden's performance and its fallout, according to the publication. Meanwhile, the chat function on the call was disabled and no questioned were allowed. The committee members who spoke with AP said the call may have worsened the panic felt among the president's allies in this race.

DNC spokesperson Hannah Muldavin told Newsweek via email on Sunday that the call was part of a regularly hosted meeting held quarterly.

"On the call, Chair Harrison provided updates on the latest fundraising numbers and recapped the week," which included, "the debate on Thursday, when President Biden outlined a positive vision to drive progress and Donald Trump lied through his teeth and refused to accept the results of the election," Muldavin said.

During Thursday night's debate, moderator Dana Bash asked Trump after he repeatedly dodged the question, "Will you accept the results of the election regardless of who wins?" Trump responded: "If it's a fair and legal and good election—absolutely."

Meanwhile, Salazar wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday night, "Gotta say, our presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee shouldn't be in a close contest with a multi-felon, lying Republican bastard. It should be a bludgeoning."

Trump was found guilty last month on 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide hush money paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election. Daniels alleged she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, which he denies. The former president has maintained his innocence, and his legal team intends to appeal the verdict.

Salazar told AP that Republicans are "the ones who should be looking for a new nominee, not us. And unfortunately for us, because of our president's performance on Thursday night, that is now an open discussion."

Newsweek reached out to Salazar via social media direct message for comment.

Meanwhile, there have been calls for Biden to drop out of the race among some Democrats, and The New York Times editorial board.

Biden has said that he has the best chance of defeating Trump because he did it in 2020. However, The Times' editorial board wrote in an article published Friday, titled, "To Serve His Country, President Biden Should Leave the Race," that voters "cannot be expected to ignore what was instead plain to see: Mr. Biden is not the man he was four years ago." The article added that Biden appeared "as the shadow of a great public servant," on the debate stage.

Meanwhile, during an appearance on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat and Biden ally, defended the president after his debate performance, calling it "a bad night."

"It's not about performance, in terms of a debate, it's about performance in a presidency," the congresswoman told host Dana Bash. "The reaction to the lies of Donald Trump is something that maybe TV isn't focusing on, but people are. And to have a debate where you have to spend half your time negating what he said because he knows nothing about the truth. On one side of the screen you have integrity, the other side you have dishonesty."

While there were misleading statements from both sides, Trump made more than Biden. CNN counted over 30 false statements made by the former president while the network said Biden made at least nine false or misleading statements during the debate.

Update 6/30/24, 5:17 p.m. ET: This article has been updated with comment from the DNC and additional information.

I had to write the democrats off as a lost cause in 2020 because being a democrat was just an eternal game of trying to warn people that the party was about to fuck up, being ignored and told I don't know what I was talking about, and then somehow being blamed in hindsight for the fuckups I predicted. When Biden got the nomination I was so angry, I thought there's no way he could win, I still maintain he wouldn't have had it not been for covid. But democrats were all in on the "most electable candidate" narrative, and the fact that he beat Trump to them was proof that they had been correct. They never bothered to ask if he was reelectable though.

I'm actually a little surprised that this is what it took to get donors to start questioning the party. I would have thought they were a little more cold-blooded than the rank and file voter, but it seems they have been scammed just as much as the rest of us. If Biden loses, watch the dems blame their disloyal donors. And watch them never act like it was their job to win the donors over and not the job of the donors to be unquestionable loyal to a party that hates them. Things are pretty bad if they are treating their donors like this. I can only conclude that dems have started to believe their own lies, and they don't know how to stop doing it even behind closed doors anymore.

I find it impressive that they could actually decipher 9 of his sentences in that debate to even start fact checking them.
He appeared like a tired and homeless Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show.

Also, does these nine falsehoods include where he "beat medicare?"
Best fucking presidental debate ever. I am watching it over and over.

The gall of these people to keep hammering this narrative of "Trump lied" over and over and over in all their messaging. It's clearly been communicated as the primary attack method. Meanwhile right in his opening Biden states the easily refuted lie of "Trump told people to inject bleach" and later on the "very fine people" lie. Both take mere minutes for anyone who bothers to look to see the truth of these things.

What are Trump's lies supposed to be? That he didn't have sex with Stormy Danials? I don't know if that's true or not, but it's not really that relevant to me. That he said he didn't call US veterans "suckers and losers"? I believe him - nobody even if they genuinely thought that which I most certainly don't believe Trump does - would be so grossly stupid as to make a remark to a general at a memorial service. The rest I can only think of general statements such as "greatest presidency" stuff which is more bombast than what we think of as lies.

DARVO to the max,

I finally get it, the reason the Democrats are melting down over this is that they drank their own kool aid about Joe Biden. No one living in the real world was surprised about sleepy Joe's performance but for once they didn't have a narrative prepared to spin his senior moments and thus couldn't defer to that when questioned.

God I love this. The most powerful position in the world is contested between two selfish, geriatric, retards, and the milk is already flowing, and much more will come.

Me dearest wish is for the election to come down to a few votes and a recount in some irrelevant backwater. This will cause the most massive tantrums thinkable.

I just posted this in another thread, but they absolutely do.

They changed the definition or vaccine. That literally happened.

They think men can be women.

They believe their own lies and they can't stop.

I think it was the part when he was talking about how we had the best H²o, the best air, and so on (I think he made like 10 claims that were obvious hyperbole), stuff about the state of the economy during his term, how we were completely energy independent on Jan 6th, and about how Biden doesn't have a six under handicap.

I don't think he actually lied about any factual statements. But you know how the media is.

They still spun one up. I was curious as to just how they would handle the loss and monitored reddit after the debate. The first day they had turbo jannies sweeping harder then ever before. The few places not completely censored were off topic threads (subs?) like pics.

After about 24 hours they coped about how biden was a better person and trump was a criminal. That was expected what was shocking was what happened about 72 hours later. Political themed reddits started to declare that biden won the debate... and ran with it.

It was actually kind of amazing to see how the hivemind just kind of rejected reality.

I didn't see the debates but I heard, even from friends who probably voted Biden, that his performance was a shit show.

Trump was practically purpose-built from birth to be infront of a camera or crowd and engage with them. Home field advantage was always his.

The Rekieta defense! Yah awnuh, bootlickers and gentrymen of the united states, I have a 106 degree fever and can't do the debate tonight. Damn kids!

Big spender Dem donors are insane lefties and true believers who'll give money no matter what.

Oh aYd remember.... ORANGE MAN BAD

The gall of these people to keep hammering this narrative of "Trump lied" over and over and over in all their messaging.
Whether or not Trump lied isn't even relevant, because it doesn't change the fact that Biden has dementia and is unfit to hold office.

If I were an American, I'd be voting for Trump this election, even if I think he's a contemptible man who shouldn't be president - because that's better than having the US run by a (poorly) stage managed figurehead who can barely string a sentence together. Some of his gaffes have been bad enough, but a man who's this much of a liability could cause serious international incidents or completely fail to protect American interests... and if there was an emergency and people needed to act fast, there isn't time to go through the charade of enacting the 25th Amendment to hand power over to the VP temporarily, pending a supermajority in the Senate.

The least charitable possible interpretation of Trump is still better than Biden. Orange man bad; dementia man worse. But the hardcore Biden supporters can't seem to recognise this - attacking the opponent doesn't work if you also have to keep pumping out articles saying "Biden did NOT shit in an adult diaper while meeting international leaders".
