What is with modern companies obsession with trying to be funny in tv ads?

Idk what you're talking about, this has like, always been a thing in some form or fashion. Now are there more examples of it happening today? Maybe. But there's a whole lot of shit you must be missing if you think pharmaceutical companies are trying to fit their tight 5 in the ads they're trying to serve to boomers.
I don't watch TV (because it's absolute crap), nor do I watch AIDS ads, however I remember when they tried to make those that were borderline pornographic or extremely suggestive because of the implications, and it was an absolute disgrace to life itself.
This is a much more specific example that I do remember. There was definitely a period of time where ads were full of sexual innuendos for basically no reason. You'd get an ad for Arby's and it'd have some model probably not a pound over 115 taking a bite of a burger, getting all the greasy shit on her face like we're supposed to believe a woman would ever do that shit.

Oh yeah those old AXE bodyspray ads were fucking ridiculous, and also responsible for CWC signature stank

Dracula has woken up, and appears to have broadband access.

You wait until you see what women are wearing these days, Count, you'll craw back into your coffin.
Depending on the incarnation, he would be either extremely disgusted, or he would take a Chromebook into his coffin and goon for the rest of time.

Commercials trying to be funny is nothing new, but I've definitely noticed an uptick in the forced "how do you do fellow kids" type of humor. Like boomer-tier shit. I'd imagine it coincides with the push for brands to emulate the "funny" and "relatable" gimmick accounts on Twitter.

"How do you do, fellow kids?"?

That's not how it is at all anymore.

Remember how Super Bowl ads used to be a cultural cornerstone but now all the corporations are terrified of doing anything remotely edgy and/or funny so now it's all about emotional manipulation and lecturing?

Pepperidge Farm remembers and it'll be a while before we might see a commercial like this.

This one is a decade old but it offended Mugabe because of the way they portrayed him in that ad.
I woudn't mind an updated version featuring Jacob Zuma or Julius Malema. :story:

It's pretty much always been a thing but I can't help but notice insurance companies do it CONSTANTLY. I mean that's some serious shit they handle and their commercials are the opposite of something that would inspire confidence in their services, call me crazy but I think important matters like insurance should be treated with some level of maturity.

I found the same thing and is the crux of what I'm spazzing about. Insurance and banking ads putting in goofy shit and thinking it'll convince people to spend thousands of dollars with them.

It's like they've taken an AI software that has Asperger's and fed it episodes of Everyone Loves Raymond and then told it to write a script for a wacky yet relatable ad for insurance premiums.
