UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

As expected, Labour won. Looks like the Conservatives didn't get as low seats as some predicted. Apparently Reform comes 3rd in the popular vote, but only has 4 seats.
Looking at the numbers it seems Reform gained about ~13% voter share while the Torries lost 20%. I'm guessing the rest of the 7% went to mainly Labor and Lib dem?

How is giving labor the country a win I just feel the right over just got psi-oped in to this.
It’s the perpetual swing of all European politics.

The left get, spend all the money, set everything on fire.

The right get in, steady the ship, run out of ideas, get caught with their fingers in the till.

The cycle repeats.

The weird thing this time is the left have no money to spend as it was all burnt during Covid.

I think their answer will be “print even more money, import even more cheap labour” which means we are looking at a Reform/Conservative government next election.

This is going to be more of the same, but on steroids and with girl-dick.

Still no news on Jess Phillips
She's in with 19,000 votes, 10,000 more than Reform in second place.

52% voter turn out in the area.

Problem is there is not really a right/left divide. There is the Establishment which both parties are part of but one of them wants to do more new things and one of them wants to do less. Both want the country back in a state of feudalism but Labour want it to also have a caste system where the more protected minority points you have the more untouchable you are. Not to the degree of a politician of course, they are your betters, serf, but they want a Britain where the peasants must toil in the dirt for them and some of the abuses the peasants do to one another are overlooked because of who the offenders and victims are.

As expected. However I'm surprised Reform has won a few seats. Not in my area sadly but it was extremely close.

Besides, Farage won in Clacton so he's going to make shit a whole lot more entertaining now he's actually in parliament. I expect the political bloodsports to be amazing.

On the other hand it looks like my family is actually going to have to consider the strong possibility we're going to have to flee the country because Labour's power means the immigrants are going to be more plentiful than ever.

This is the same issue the US is facing, but eventually you are going to run out of places to flee and be forced to fight with no hope of winning or perish.

All polling expected them to win anywhere between 3 and 7 seats, the exit poll which had them at 11 seats was shocking, but that hasn't happened, Seem turn out for reform is bit lower than expected, it was around 14%, but polling at it at 16%.

How would you set about doing that and what countries would you choose from? I'm asking since if it gets bad enough, I may consider it, but I don't have any particularly valuable skills and my parents are quite old, I wouldn't like leaving them behind.

Jess Phillips (Labour) won by 693 votes and was booed and heckled by people yelling about Palestine as she tried to give her speech. Apparently it has been a really nasty campaign.
The runner up was Jody McIntyre of the Workers' Party. I assumed Jody was another lefty woman. No. This is Jody.

Because both the big parties represent the establishment so it doesn't matter which of them is in, they will both betray you regardless.

Only getting a handful of seats may not be a win but it's better to be in the game than totally excluded.

The Britsh voting lawa seem to be really strange. I read that Farage's party actually got 15% of the votes but thanks to the laws only got a handful of seats. Can a Island Kiwi perhaps elaborate on that?

We're thinking of the US and that's because my dad and I have American citizenship so we can pass through as much as we like. America has its own problems but unlike the UK it's fucking MASSIVE and people don't immediately piss themselves at the thought of using a knife for anything other than cutting salads.

It's a little bit trickier to consider other countries because of the extra preparations you'd need to do before you get there. You'd need a decent grasp on the language(s) they speak, make sure you know someone who can help you get a good job, etc.

A lot of it is to do with London. London isn't one place - it's broken up into several different areas with an MP for each of them and that's what gave Labour a "landslide". They won't say it but they really were banking on Mudslime votes and most of them infest the city.

Most other locations are only broken up into one or two areas and whoever gets the most votes in those areas win seats. It's not who wins overall it's who wins in smaller areas.

The share of the national popular vote doesn't mean much. What matters is how many votes a candidate gets in their electoral ward.
