China has a love/hate relationship with Japan. They hate Japan for the obvious reasons (WW2, history etc) and also love and envy Japan (anime, culture, advanced first-world society, JAV).
About that last one, I unironically think China hate-watches JAV.

I remember seeing them kicking them out of everything when COVID was going around in 2019/20. One of the early stories they ran with was that black people caused it. And you saw citizens like denying them access even to McDonalds in China.

Funny thing is that this could have been successful. Market it well and you are golden. No one would accuse it of unnecessary diversity (it is based on African Mythology). But the first time most people learned of its existence was when they accused the audience of bigotry. The lesson? Be nice for you never know what is the first impression you will make on others.

Even if a lot of people were burned out on Metroid-Vania style games, I know many who would've absolutely given this game a shot because it was something unique had the dev's head not be a complete jackass and entitled prick over it (even with SBI infection).

This is far fetched at best. JRPGs are already a niche market so he would possibly lure what 5 more people to play his game that were dumb enough to think it was a tales game? If even that.
The only person this would fool is grandmas looking to buy Little Jimmy a game for his birthday. And I don't think anyone under the age of 25 plays Tales games.

You're not completely wrong about the grannies. The Western media and game companies love to talk a big game about "modern audiences" and trying to appeal to the (non-existent) female audience but the Tales of games are legitimately popular with the female demographic, in Japan at least. In addition to attractive female characters, Tales of games has many husbandos for the fujoshi (smelly female NEETs) crowd to enjoy.

It got a spotlight at some game show last year or earlier this year and I just remember it looking like generic DEI slop. And what do you know? It was!
Every successful game I've played in the past year or two has never been featured on any of these shows if its not established AAA.
Baldurs gate 3 wasn't even talked about by them until it actually came out and they had to admit it was good and it isn't without flaws.
Just goes to show you really aren't going to see much at big show talks that is worth its weight in anything.

It would actually be cool to see a game set in Africa or a fantasy equivalent, no need for forced "diversity" by blacking up Europe. Oh, good lord I fucking hate it, It is just viscerally disgusting watching a show set in 1500s and it looks like a fucking united colors of Benetton ad.
That's part of the reason why you know that the true believers are the lower down people and not the ones making decisions, if they actually cared about what they say they do they'd set games in Africa, and elsewhere but it's always this deeply cynical libtard baiting like putting hip hop music behind a nigger killing a bunch of nips in Sengoku Japan... and he's also an assassin, literally the only black guy on an island nation, it's all just fucking retarded...
