That was the recent experience of two friends strolling in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood after 11pm on a Thursday night. They say a man in a ski mask jumped off the back of a moped and pointed a gun at one of them, taking the 29-year-old man's watch and the 32-year-old woman's purse. The gunman then hopped back on the moped and the getaway driver sped the two criminals off into the night.

The female victim is certain the criminals were Venezuelan -- based on her familiarity with their accents, thanks to her having grown up in that country. What she said next spoke volumes:

You know who is going to fight the hardest to prevent the NFA from being overturned, the registry abolished and full-auto made legal again? The gun people who spent $30k for a shitty MP5. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in legally-transferable full-auto firearms in the past 10-15 years and that entire market would collapse overnight.

A new Glock 18 (machine pistol) costs about $550 today in places where you can legally buy one. If you can find one legal to purchase in the US and jump through all the hoops it'll cost minimum $20k.

Bad laws must continue to exist because of poor investment decisions? Look, if you spent as much money as a decent new car on a decades old gun because of some stupid law that created a loophole then that's on you. It's the risk you took by arbitraging a backdoor gun ban with money.

Some gun people won't like that take, especially if they spent thousands on a gun that should have only cost maybe $800 or so, but that's just how it goes. I can sympathize with that position, but it's not realistic to hold up the tide of progress to benefit only a few people.

I didn't say I agreed with them I simply explained reality. If it comes down to the lobbying effort you're able to fund versus the guy who has $30k to spend on a toy... oh well.
