Okay, I may have legitimately lost friends for trying to reassure them - sensitively - that things will not be so bad. No MAGA-ing, didn't say anything good about Trump.

Right now (and for the last 4 years) the left has been extremely toxic. They eat their own, compete over purity and cry whenever they're exposed and try to act like the truth is relative. Say what you will about the kooky ass extreme right, but they can at least shut off politics for a minute and have a cordial conversation if they need to

If they're dumb enough to listen to mainstream media and ditch you as a friend, they weren't much fucking friends to begin with. I have friends across the political spectrum because 98% of shit we talk about isn't politics.
What's increasingly stupid about this situation is the right, and even the fricken alt-right are becoming the only spaces where you can go in, disagree and argue your case without being endlessly yelled down for having a "problematic" position.
But yes, we've had people blarting on about "Post-truth" politics and the only tosspots apparently practising it are the left whingers.

The main tactic is to change meanings of words so that, by definition, they are right (and you are wrong/evil), ex., racism can only be perpetuated by "those in power/position of privilege" against "the oppressed", so they are in the clear to make ridiculous statements about white people.
I see plenty of ad hom and other fallacies used as arguments here, but it's a troll forum so I can't tell who's serious about it.
And yet, still saner than damn near everywhere else.
I try to empathize. If you genuinely believe that the president-elect is a racist/sexist/xenophobe/latest buzzword, who you see as the figurehead of a movement that you hate to your very core, I can understand why you would go bat-fucking-shit at everyone who is calm or neutral. On a personal level, you likely think that I'm invalidating you yourself. It's not rational, but emotional people are not rational.
So I tried to address the root fear: that the US will go to hell in a handbasket. It's not, don't worry, he's all bark and no bite just like so many other presidents. I was hoping that would suffice, but then I realized something: they're not only scared of Armageddon, but on principle, they do not want a president who seems to represent everything they hate.
In other words, Trump could turn out to govern exactly the same way as Obama, and he'd still be hated by the progressive left crowd for being a big ciswhitehet meanie. This is the source of pretty much all partisan bs.

Eh, honestly I don't think this one is on the President. The issue is that "big boy" journalism was a collection of boring and unpleasant truths and these kids who grew up on the teet of the Daily Show and Colbert decided that the real journalism was weird twitter and tumblr tranny blogs. So to legitimize themselves they decided to start shouting down anyone that disagreed with those positions as a Fox News watching white supremacist or a gay hating Christian bigot. By treating the other side with massive quantities of disrespect and acting like their over weight, jobless, blue haired buddies were now the Cool kids Table, they just kept fighting one another for chairs at said table. Go back 3 years, 2 years and 1 year ago on twitter and look for the Comedian sweetheart de jour and you'll see it's always changing because the last guy/gal said something against the group think and was ostracized. Then that one either leaves twitter or becomes a super safe-space 'mo about everything to try and win their way back as an ally or by attacking everyone else who might have once thought "That white guy seems nice". First it was Delaney, after him it was Colbert, then it was Patton Oswalt, then Louis CK, then Chris Rock. These people literally cannot help themselves when it comes to attacking each other, they go from one moment of fawning over someone to the next seeing a bit of "impurity" and attacking them en masse until they can take their spot on the ladder. It's literally high school mentality social climbing that grows and nurtures narcissism and self loathing like mushrooms under a tarp.

In high school basically very little. I had a history class where we watched Schindler's List while going over the causes and fallout pretty in depth for a Modern History course that did the Russian Revolution and the history of the state I went to school in a similar manner, but that's not going to be typical for most high schools. College; nothing unless you take a history class that includes it in college.
