Yes, everyone seems to think that people in those sorts of jobs are supposed to be some action movie James Bond motherfucker when the moment calls. What saves people most of the time is that most of the time there are no attempts made. And this also is the reason when something does happen the response is bullshit. Because they're not sharp to it, it hardly ever happens.

Most people in America are really soft. Aside from some cities and infamous places--most of us have never been around any real violence. We live in an incredibly safe place. The responses really are legit just because it was so out of nowhere. Lots of people bloviate about what they'd do in their fantasies but we don't take them seriously. I would discount it - incompetence is massively more likely than some multi pronged elaborate plot.
The shooter is real, had motives we don’t know yet, expected to die in the process and got a shot in.
The SS aren’t omnipotent, and every lunatic in America has a rifle, so this was bound to happen at some point to one or other candidate.
