Its what the authorities have announced. The head of the body was obliterated by the gunshot he took making facing recognition afterward in theory impossible. They claim he was carrying no ID whatsoever with him.
They have claimed that he was positively identified by a DNA test overnight of some sort. How they knew whose DNA to compare his to or how they made a DNA test match is undisclosed.

Maybe they matched the serial number on his rifle to its owner and tracked down his identity that way.

"Registered republican" just means you are signed up for that partys primary. It doesnt mean you voted Republican or Democrat in the actual election. If you are in a closed primary state and the other party announced no contest presidential primary it makes perfect sense to register in the primary you can actually vote in.
