Something I've learned in the last 24 hours is that Americans are more willing to kill other Americans than they are to kill Russian/Chinese/Iranian soldiers. It's weird because even though Dems/Reps are different, Americans with different political ideologies still have a lot more in common with each other than these three rival nations.

Real proxy wars at the behest of Washington serve as emotional proxy wars for the American body politic. Neither sincerely give much of a fuck about said enemy nation in a vacuum, it's that the perceived friend in Washington becomes their own avatar of action. The political party in power at the time, and their own internal narrative, determines what how their subjects view the foreign power. It's how liberals went from drudging up accusations of McArthyism and fear mongering about Russia all the time to suddenly demanding boots on the ground in Moscow.
They think Putin is a kind of right-wing, ultra-conservative, fascist - he serves as a stand in for Republicans. Likewise; Republicans know that Democrats toe this line so they suddenly care about all the money going to Ukraine, how corrupt the government there really is, and see Russia as the victim of *Democrat* globo homo. Same can be said for the sympathies, hand-waving, and grandstanding when it comes to China. The facts of the issue don't really matter.
