For more than 40 years, the business community was considered one of the "three prongs" of support for the Republican party, the other two being religious conservatives and national security/military types. For that reason, the GOP had it as a reflex to always give the business community whatever it wanted, from tax breaks to foreign migrant worker exceptions.

Then that same community started culturally hooking up with the Democrats and the left, and happily serving as unofficial enforcers of left-wing cultural norms and priorities. So it was eventually going to come to a head with the rest of the party going "hey, why the fuck are we giving these assholes everything they want while we get jack shit, and they get to go off and play footsie with the other team?"
