One of the funniest things to happen to the mythologised version of 1970s NYC is digitisation. Because while people like Marsha and Sylvia Rivera could basically claim they did something and argue about it and you wouldn't really be able to prove it, now you can easily find and cite primary sources. For example, this issue of Village Voice from July 1971:

See, they should do what they did with regards to the so-called Compton's Cafeteria riot (note that there aren't any sources from before 2005, when "Susan Stryker" started astroturfing this bullshit history) where they took an event that was so minor that no one wrote anything about it, no one remembers what day it took place (the official commemoration just says August 1966), and the earliest recorded mention of it is from 6 years later (after Gene Compton's closed earlier that year). Because there's no evidence that it even happened, there's definitely no evidence that it didn't happen the way that the trannies claim it did.

And if anyone asks why no one reported on a mob of trannies torching cop cars and local businesses just a couple blocks from San Francisco's biggest newspaper offices, just claim that they were too conservative to cover it. If you ask why the gay newspapers that were reporting on the gay picketers outside of Compton's didn't cover it just say that they were too transphobic.

At this point all you need is a couple dozen old trannies who will claim that they were there (easy) and at least one attention-whore cop who will claim to have been there (Officer Blackstone).

It's the Big Lie. Anyone who isn't already skeptical of anything involving trannies his going to have a hard time believing that they'd just tell such a blatant lie, and anyone who is already skeptical of trannies can easily be dismissed as a transphobic. Simple!

Funnily enough I've actually just started drafting up some things after getting inspired by @Spunt 's "Helpful Guide to Britain" thread, doing a deep dive on the history of the transgender rights movement, predominately focused on America (with particular interest on New York, since it's where a lot of these myths originate from). One part I want to cover is how it's only fairly recently that the difference between HSTS and AGP has been dismissed, because throughout the 20th century most trans people seemed to acknowledge that "homosexual transsexual" and "heterosexual transsexual" were not the same thing, and in fact they were actively hostile to each other. And I want to cite as many primary sources as possible and dig into where certain claims seemed to originate, because as you observe, they mostly seem to come from some random trans people saying "oh yeah I was there and I saw it". Hilariously, while checking out some information on STAR it became apparent that the New York Pride Parades started getting overwhelmed with "veterans of Stonewall" demanding to march and with no evidence they were even there. But a big impression I've got is in the early 1970s onwards, there were a lot of homeless transgender prostitutes who basically insisting that everything was about them, with no evidence to back it up (prime offenders: Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson).

I'd heard of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot before and one thing that always niggled me about it was this photo, that's often cited as being from the night:

Why do they have signs? That's not something hastily scrawled down on a piece of cardboard, it's either been carefully painted or printed on a custom shaped board. That doesn't make sense with the riot as described, which was completely spontaneous. It appears to have got associated with Compton's as a result of a mid 2000s student film about those riots that used stock photos of LGBT riots to illustrate their point. This photo seems to actually come from a protest in October 1969 (after Stonewall) outside the Beaux-Arts Ball, a drag ball hosted in a gay bar that was part of the Tavern Guild. The protestors are picketing because drag was only permitted in San Francisco by police during "Halloween Season" and New Year's, and they're unhappy that the gay bar was willing to make money off of drag queens when it was legal but wouldn't otherwise take a stand and host them when it was illegal.

With most of these things, it seems like if you pull at one thread the whole thing unravels.
