I genuinely thought in the first fog of war hours that the Secret Service agents had performed bravely. The shooter was dead within a moment of getting his shot off. It seemed incredibly fast and well-handled. I didn't for a moment think this would be what was revealed when the fog of war cleared and we could reconstruct the events of the day.

Local police did everything right, they reported back to Secret Service about the suspicious guy over and over for an hour.

Local citizens did everything right, they recorded the guy, screamed for help from police, did anything they could to alert authorities.

Even his parents, by the sounds of it, did everything right, calling the local police to report that their son was missing and they were very concerned. They knew he'd taken the gun (he'd told them he was going to the range, but they didn't believe him).

Everyone did everything right up until it hit the Secret Service, and they just shrugged and let it happen. This is horrifying. The whole agency needs to be cleaned out, top to bottom.

As has been said many times before, principles only hold so long as both sides are willing to abide by underlying rules. For a very long time, I've been of the opinion that the vocal nuts have been the outliers and that the majority of people can be debated, argued, or reasoned with; that we can lock horns and whatever the outcome, agree to disagree.

This is not the case and hasn't been for quite some time. It noticeably accelerated during the 2016 election, but goes back quite a bit further.
You cannot hold an outright hostile group to your own standards, as said standards will hobble you, if not outright kill you in such a situation.
This situation isn't groups vying for their vision of an ideal America, but of those that desire power and subjugation above all else. You can see it in the moral superiority and weaponization wielded by the Left over the past generation. You've had people getting fired for criticizing what should be, in any rational society, overt insanity; and yet suddenly now that the pendulum has started to swing back we must grant these cretins the kindness and respect that they do graciously withheld from us? No.

If the Secret Service pretends to defend a president but doesn't actually, then you can pretty much count on there being some crazy person taking a potshot. If you've decided to ignore reports and engage in a "never shoot first" policy in that circumstance, you are as good as pulling the trigger yourself.

Donald Trump could easily afford to hire his own private Secret Service, if he had been properly informed they did not intend to defend him. They were worse than useless, because they made it so he thought he had protection when he did not, and took away his opportunity to understand his own defensive weaknesses.
