I disagree completely. Phil is the antithesis of a variety streamer, because no matter which game he attempts to play, you get the exact same content. The same bellyaching about low support, the same crying in his beer about 'duh trullz', the same disgusting, toxic excuse of a personality, and the same relentless bitching about his impending doom ad nauseum. Please support if you like the content he provides for free, won't you?

I don't think he has to convince himself---in Phil's mind he's a YouTube pioneer. The throwback channel exists because 1) it usually makes him $100 a night without having to game, 2) he sees it as putting some legendary TV show or movie back on the air. Lately he's been saying that his streams from the early days are "lost media" that are being saved for "posterity". He thinks of them like a classic silent film that someone found a copy of and restored while everyone else sees them as a drunk 30-year-old making scat jokes.

Point is, it's not to trick the dents---he's a narcissist with a massive ego who truly believes his gameplay and commentary need to be kept for historical purposes.

Now juxtapose that was the classic TIHYDP of Metal Gear Solid, which has been cut to be a comedy clip. I will say that efforts like these make Phil more entertaining than he has any right to be. There’s obviously room for raw gameplay, but I do enjoy the recuts to make it more palatable.

Phil's reasoning with Jasper doesn't make sense to me. I imagine that poor cat is going insane when locked up in a room all night. there's a few factors for his early success

* released lots of videos, definitely helped with the algorithm
* actually went outside to buy games at early release and had videos up on day1 (at times when physical sales still mattered)
* unfiltered gameplay (no walkthrough, no review, no promo). just an average retard stumbling through the game

Especially in respect to the last 2 points it's important to remember that streaming didn't really exist, and a lot of people were already pretty jaded about IGN and their ilk. Nowadays no one needs DSP for the raw gameplay (it's everywhere) plus his commentary and gameplay are ass, so no one watches his garbage.

Not only streaming didn't exist, but it was a bother posting any game content 10-15 years ago. Capturing from your console is a pain, even PC recording was tricky unless you had expensive hardware. Phil really just stumbled into it poorly recording himself playing fighting games and such.
