I was doing a little research about this last night because I wanted to try organic toothpaste that had less strong of a flavor but doesn't have fluoride or SLS in it. Technically, you don't need toothpaste at all to clean your teeth - it's more about the abrasive brush than the paste. You can get fluoride in other ways such as drinking water with fluoride in it.
Malnutrition can be an issue when it comes to bone and teeth health. It's hard to build a sturdy scaffold if you don't have the right materials. A lot of kids that grew up post WW2 in my country had poor nutrition because there just wasn't enough food around to be picky about quality. It's pretty common for people born from the mid 1940s to the 1960s to have trouble with their bones and teeth, especially when they began to age.
She mentioned having a box of cat toys at one point because her dad was unhappy about her getting a cat (because she can't keep her hovel clean) before she presumably threatened to commit die because he wouldn't get her a cat and he caved. Personally, I would've let her die. Siggy would've gone to a loving home with people who care for her properly.

I think the great irony is that she probably would have had a dental plan/insurance if she had chosen to continue working. Instead she went on disability and now needs three teeth yoinked.
