A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Police car flipped over amid ongoing disorder

Police are dealing with ongoing disorder which has broken out in the Harehills area of Leeds.

West Yorkshire Police said officers were initially called to reports of a disturbance at an address in Luxor Street at about 17:00 BST, but that further "pockets of disorder" had broken out.

Footage shared on social media appears to show large crowds of people in the street and a police car coming under attack before being flipped on to its side, while other videos show a number of fires burning in the road.

The force said additional officers had been sent to the area to "assist with the management of this incident". No injuries have been reported.

A number of roads have been closed and people have been advised to avoid the area.

In a statement police said that on arrival officers found "an ongoing disturbance which involved some agency workers and some children".

A spokesperson said: "More people started to attend the location and a decision was made to remove the agency workers and the children to a safe place.

"A crowd started to gather and more officers were requested to attend the area, where some pockets of disorder were occurring.

"More officers have been deployed to the area to assist with the management of this incident."

Footage shared on social media showed the police car coming under attack with its windows being smashed in.

One person is seen smashing the car with a scooter as well as stones and other debris being thrown.

BBC reporter Bethany Parsons, who was near the scene on Harehills Road, described hundreds of people being gathered on the streets.

"There was debris and rubbish strewn all over the floor as well as a big police presence, including armed officers and police vehicles."

Posting on X, Councillor Salma Arif, for Gipton and Harehills, appeared alongside a police inspector, with a message urging people to stay at home.

Ms Arif said: "There's an ongoing situation currently in Harehills.

"We are asking everybody in the area please stay at home at this moment in time.

Insp Nicholls, from the East Leeds Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "If you could just stay where you are, stay in your houses while we manage this incident.

"If you are in the crowd I would ask you to go home please so we can keep everybody safe."

It is the 2nd most deprived area in Leeds and has the worst educational outcomes in Leeds and they can't blame socio-economic factors like usual since the 1st and 3rd most deprived areas beat it quite easily.

All of this "we're going after the gangs" is a massive smoke screen. So they close down a few gangs. They don't think new ones will spring up to take their place ? It's like saying "oh, we're going to tackle the war on drugs by shutting down the cartels". Shut down one cartel, another one springs up to replace it. All the time there is huge money to be made in organised crime, there will always be people willing to take the risk of imprisonment vesus the possibility of massive wealth. Just to be clear about 'Martyns Law' which is supposedly in response to the Manchester arena bombing in 2017 #dontlookbackinanger.

This is Labour signalling to the Police that they're 'on side' and so long as they don't go after 'protected' groups and don't keep leaking to the media and sabotaging policy like they did under the tories everything will be cool.

Even though the police had multiple opportunities to stop the bombing, they're being rewarded for their incompetance with a bill, that forces venues to essentially fund the police presence give them all the 'facilities' the lads want (no need for a two hour lunch break to grab a kebab from the other side of the city) . Essentially exactly what happened after they fucked up at Hillsborough.

Read my post, mush. Harehills has been wog capital of yorkshire since the 80s. Pakis started moving in around 20 years ago.



Fun fact: Harehills and chapeltown used to be two seperate towns, they're now all classed as Harehills because the crime rate was so high that they needed to 'halve' it by doubling the size of Harehills.

As I understand it, they're not claiming asylum in France, so it's not up to France to do anything with them. As there is no border control coming into France from whichever other European country they passed through, I think the French view them as an inconvenience, but not a permanent problem as they are passing through. In effect, it benefits the French to get them to England.
You have to remember whose side the Human Rights Lawyers are on ( clue - it's not ours ! ) - they get to claim all sorts of wonderful fees from the state to defend the asylum claimers and further their agenda. The whole of this system is rigged in favour of the status quo. The main problem is the ECHR is stuck in time - when it was introduced post WW2, the world was a much different place and mass immigration by people of a completely different culture wasn't really considered a possibility, certainly not as economic migrants.

I didn't say it was necessarily effective - just that if you increase the risk of getting caught you make the whole thing less attractive.
