Back in the day I operated the exact same machine, just about the exact same size before I got a much better job. The other machinists and I would share the pics of lathe accidents and all related usually something like "NSFW take a good look what happens when you fuck around with 150lbs of steel spinning at 1500RPM 3 feet from your face" I knew a guy missing 2 fingers worked next door in a very similar capacity. One day I asked his supervisor how he lost his fingers. He starts his reply with the words "Well, the first one he lost...." and about a month later he lost about half finger #3. I love working with metal I get to build whatever I want but, the energy required to form it is so incredibly destructive. The conventional metal lathe is one of the most dangerous machines per capita in the world imho. If a shop can afford it they will purchase a "CNC" or "Robotic" lathe that requires very little human interaction mostly coding. In China human life isn't worth the extra 10,000 USD to upgrade to a CNC from a conventional lathe which is why we have this thread I suppose. China gonna "China"

I was once sent to a factory that used motorized looms to run fabric. I was told that if my hand contacted the loom, it would deglove my hand and possibly pull me into it. I decided to fuck off and reject that temp job. I have no problem working in an industrial environment but that was a "fuck this shit, I'm outta here" type gig. No safety guards whatsoever.
