I wouldn't call roach and troonstan happy. Emotionally codependent, immature young adults afraid of being single, yes. But not happy. If Tristan really cared about his roach, he'd get her to quit drawing porn and gooning on discord all day. Instead, Tristan turns into a massive hypocrite and defends her for behaviour he rightfully criticized others for, while she suicide baits and writes unhinged walls of text saying she'd become a chair for him. (It was roach who wrote that love letter, not Tristan, she directly addresses him at one point in the letter.)
They're not together out of mutual affection, but because they use each other to cope. Thats not a foundation for a stable, happy relationship.

This isn't how two young lovers would think. If this Onion girl (Tristan and Tyler is doing my head in) is anything like she is in person as she is online, then it's quite possible fishinq believes allowing her to indulge in these obsessions because they make her happy and as some form of mental therapy is the right thing to do. In fact, if he really cares about her, it wouldn't be hard for him to create a tremendous amount of cognitive dissonance where her predatory hypersexuality is justified, and why triggering her 'suicidal' urges by exposing her is evil.

I agree that it's co-dependent, but it also seems entirely one sided. fishinq as far as we know, doesn't partake in the gooning stuff and his animosity toward Ruben was started by Oniongirl. All this nonsense he's putting himself through by lying and talking horseshit is entirely for her benefit even as she pushes the most outrageous accusations. Given how emotionally suffocating she seems to be, I wouldn't be surprised if she and or her little band of followers had a hand in alienating his father from him as well.

I think it's important to remember that self-restraint and abstinence are seen as damaging and unnatural in these Progressive sex-positive online subcultures. Indulgence and embrace of these fetishes and kinky thoughts is seen as an empowering virtue, and they feel like it's a human right. Telling them that sexy cartoons are a form of grooming probably sounds like insane Fundie right-wing claptrap to them even as their brains melt obsessing over them.
