A Canadian woman in Ontario is facing accusations of “racism” after documenting her concerns about South Asians openly defecating in the sand at her local beach.

Last week, TikToker @itsnattylxnn2.0 posted a video discussing a number of incidents she had witnessed in her small Ontario home of Wasaga Beach. With a population of just 52,000 people, the idyllic community is situated on the Nottawasaga River, and is home to the world’s longest freshwater beach.

But while @itsnattylxnn2.0 is a permanent resident in the community, the town boasts a bustling tourist industry during the summer as people flock from out of town to enjoy the sandy shores. @itsnattylxnn2.0 says the problem emerged after she observed Indian families visiting the beach.

On July 7, the mother of three uploaded a video noting that she used to live at a property that backed onto the national park where the main beach area was located, and that she witnessed large Indian families digging holes in the sand to defecate in while visiting. After the holes were dug, tents were popped over the hole to act as a rudimentary outhouse.

“They did it off my back yard. There were three different families of maybe 25, 30 people that came for barbecues who would set up right on the fence of my back yard. I saw them digging the hole. I saw them placing a tent [over the hole]. When they left, there was poop,” @itsnattylxnn2.0 says in the video. “I have had to yell at people for shitting on the border of my property line. And yes, it was Indian families.”

Yes this is true. Someone did not make this up. They dig holes and they put a tent over the hole. Back home the toilets are in the ground so you squat. They would dig deep holes and use the washroom in the ground and leave it. We used to sit outside daily and watch people to mske sure they didnt do it and this area ehere my backyard was is a very known bbq area its in a tree ares so lots of shade perfect to bbq at. This eas a daily occurrence! The beach is busy in the summer. We are left at the end of the year with poop in our sand at the beach and we are left with our bbq areas full of poop to. This is a fact !! #wasagabeach #foryoupage #fyp #blameitonthealcohol #outhouse

Two days later, @itsnattylxnn2.0 posted a follow-up video responding to some comments she had received dismissing the open defecation as a cultural difference.

“We are not back home. We are in Canada. As a local, I refuse to let my kids dig in the sand on Beach One,” she said. In another video posted that day, @itsnattylxnn2.0 announced she was going to begin a series exposing those defecating on the beach.

As @itsnattylxnn2.0 continued her commentary on the issue, noting that many Canadians had reached out to her with similar stories.

Over the next few weeks we will plan a day that is busy at the beach and go find these tents and camps where people do this. We will go live while we search and video tape it ! Stay tuned !! #wasagabeach #mainend #immigrants #foryoupage #fyp

“I’m not a racist. I’ll never be racist. But what I am is a good person. Because you guys need to know what you are running into when you come to Wasaga Beach. And it’s not locals doing it. It is people from out of town. It is immigrants that think it is okay to dig a hole, pop a squat, and bury their poop where kids play in the sand,” she said.

As @itsnattylxnn2.0 continued her videos on the subject, more detractors began pouring into her comment section, accusing her of spreading racism against Indians.

Responding to @itsnattylxnn2.0, another creator, @Maryam, accused her of being a “colonizer” trying to impose her views of hygiene on other cultures. But @itsnattylxnn2.0 quickly dispelled that accusation, noting that she was of Indigenous Canadian heritage.

@itsnattylxnn2.0 noted that some commenters, seemingly of Indian origin, had begun bullying and threatening her for her videos, with some even insulting her for being a single mother.

One Indian commenter claimed that he anticipated that @itsnattylxnn2.0 was going to falsify or “edit” videos to “fit her narrative.” But the issue of South Asians using beaches to defecate is not new and has a well-documented history.

In 2020, the Globe and Mail reported that tensions were beginning to rise in Ontario beach communities as locals expressed outrage at the massive uptick in public defecation happening on their shores. One community, St. Catharines, went so far as to vote to refuse beach access to anyone not from the immediate Niagara region.

While the Globe and Mail does not name the ethnicity of those suspected of public defecation, a cursory glance at message boards and subreddits dedicated to those communities all name South Asian immigrants as the perpetrators.

Open defecation is a known issue in India, and was so widespread that the United Nations launched a “poo in loo” campaign in 2013. The campaign featured an animated poop and catchy music encouraging Indians to “take their poo to the loo.”

As a result of the negative attention open defecation was causing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought to build hundreds of millions of toilets in the country in an effort to quash open defecation once and for all. But while Modi declared India “open defecation free” in 2019, the practice is still widespread, with beaches being a particular hotspot.

Import third world, get third world.

They also have no sense of lines or other people as I assume they had to fight for morsels of scraps back home like dogs so they will push, shove and disregard an entire line of people waiting.

Local groups have complaints that their Burger King orders come out smelling like curry because they only hire Indians now. I grew up surrounded by Indians and I've never hated them more than I do now. India is an absolute garbage country full of garbage people.

What an uneducated and intolerant racist! Doesn't this white woman understand she was in the presence of cultured people more intelligent that she can imagine. She should consider herself blessed that these oppressed people used her backyard as a toilet.

I keed, I keed. To be honest the word "racists" has no more weight to it like it did in the past. I'm disgusted just as you all are. How people tolerate this behavior is beyond me.

It's wild how much and how quickly the public opinion of Indians has changed here. Between 2008 and 2014 i spent time in Toronto and Oshawa for school and work, and there was no shortage of Indians, but they were much less... visible. You looked right through them, they fit in very well, there wasn't any reason to seethe about them. Certainly there was no mass beach shitting, no sense of a huge breaking wave of humanity about to crash down on your head. This would've been the social feeling up until about 2018 or so. I'm not sure if the population just reached a critical tipping point where integration stopped and everyone noticed, or if there's been an actual change in the demographics of Indians we are getting now, like they're all being drawn from the dumbest, gropiest, most bestial places.

I've never met an Indian that gave me cause to complain, and it hurts to read all this because Spider-Verse made India look so cool :(

Until recently I had no reason to go apeshit on jeets either, not as a whole anyways. Granted, we were all much less racist back then.

I'm thousands of miles from Toronto now and still can't avoid them, the new menace is buying up local restaurants, firing all the white teens and hiring their cousins Baljeet, Praljeet, Durjeet and Rukhesh to work under the table. So much for job creation.

I remember growing up we had a few Indian kids around, but they were all mostly Sikh. Nothing ever struck me as especially "foreign" or "exotic" about them, and they didn't even have the stereotypical 'curry' smell that everyone talks about, even when I went over to their house to play. I would be curious if the current wave of Indians are still Sikh, or if they are from different regions and religions altogether. I think another difference at play is that the Indians I encountered when I was younger were usually second or third generation, meaning that they had grown up in and were familiar with Canadian culture. Nowadays most immigrants come over as full-grown adults with no intention of integrating or changing their lifestyles whatsoever; all they want from the first world is the better economic conditions, but shortsightedly cannot comprehend what would happen if Canada were to be turned into India #2.

I like your theory of the population tipping point as well. What is the point of going through the uncomfortable hassle of integrating when you can just move into a pre-existing community of your peers and live the same as you did before? You can definitely see this with Mexicans in the USA, where there are entire enclaves who don't even bother to learn English or know the first thing about the country they have lived in for years. You can also see this to some extent with immigrants from various Asian countries, where they import every living generation of their whole family and descend upon some hapless small community. At least the hordes of Filipinos who zerg rush every Tim Hortons to replace all the staff with their relatives make the effort to speak English to you, but I think that's because it's the sole thing corporate actually requires them to do.
