#CupForBen: Father searches for discontinued blue cup for son with autism.

A UK father's search for a discontinued blue cup his son with severe autism drinks exclusively from has sparked responses from around the world.

Marc Carter said in a post on Twitter his son Ben, 14, has drunk from a blue Tommee Tippee two-handed cup since he was two years old.

But he said the cups disintegrated over time, rendering them unusable, and his current one did not have long left, after three years of use.

"People say he will drink when he's thirsty, but two emergency trips to A&E (accident and emergency department) with severe dehydration say otherwise.

"In all honesty we are really worried what will happen if [the cup] falls apart completely."

This fucking kid :story:

You know, I was going to start feeling bad for the parents until I got a look at this kid. He's a behemoth! No wonder he acts this way.

He looks like Chunk from The Goonies.

It is only recently that he discovered that he can capitalize on his son's disability online.

Like this?

It's not necessarily older parents, although that probably increases the risk. It could be a combination of genetics and environment.

Older age in the father does correlate with increased risk. Inadequate socialization in infancy is also a probable culprit. Autism is a very complicated condition.

Egh. Yeah, that's pretty pathetic. He reminds me of an autistic person that was part of a program I helped with a few years ago. He wasn't really all that autistic, just very withdrawn and insular. He was also an astonishingly good artist, easily better by default than people who've been to art college. But he was also around 320 pounds, and spent all day either on a DS playing Pokemon or with a notebook, drawing Pokemon. His parents obviously never pushed him to develop his talents, and last I knew he was basically in the exact same situation after two years in the program.

Meanwhile another person I know with much worse autism, a speech impediment, and a severe anxiety disorder is in his third year of art college and has plans to enter the comic book industry. He's needed help along every step of the way, but a combination of good professional help and good parenting have helped him move past his issues and really make something of his innate talents. Meanwhile, Mr DS is probably still gaining weight and still sitting in a corner tapping away on his DS.

The thing about the Y chromosome is that if you're male, you only have one X chromosome. To some extent, if you're female, you have two of them and if one of them has garbled data, the other one tends to fill in. So if you're male and your one copy of the X chromosome is utterly fucked, you get the full dose of whatever is fucked up. Maybe that's autism. Maybe it's something else that leads to you being retarded.

Did he ever consider special ordering them from the company itself? Offering to pay for it? Or just giving them good publicity? Companies love to do pretty cheap charitable shit that makes them look good. They could do a final run and give this little tard a lifetime supply then sell the rest as a fund raiser or some shit
Most of this is addressed in the article. I had the same question about how long the cups survived - it seems they are just now on the 2nd cup,I'm not sure where they got it since the article says these cups were made in the 90s for a specific chain. the cups probably don't last as long anymore because they are meant for toddlers not 300lbs teenagers.
Although I'd think the first cup would have had a shorter life if they were using a dishwasher before they realized they needed to keep the cup in good condition, lIke most people do. I've put way too much thought into this though.

He looks like Striker Wolf.
I Was A Teenage StrikerWolf, Coming soon to an internet near you.

In all seriousness, it's really the parents fault for keeping him on the sippy cup for this long. It's like that one episode of Rugrats where Tommy didn't want to give the bottle up. Only somehow more pathetic when it's applied to a real-life senario.

What do people who oppose finding a cure for autism for the sake of neurodiversity have to say about a case like this?
They'd probably shrug it off and complain that the people who disagree are despicable scumbags who don't care about autism.

I honestly can't tell if this is satire or not. Is it meant to be satire..?

With every passing month, I learned to stop seeing Taylor’s autism as a “disorder,” but rather as a source of pageviews and millions of unique monthly visitors. I learned to stop seeing my son as “disabled,” but rather as a source of untapped ad revenue.

Lol and you wonder why actual autists hate "Autism Speaks" and similar mommy blog factories.

You hope it's satire. But you don't know, do you? Because there are so many of these people out there to whom it is not satire. It is how they actually think.

But... It IS satire, right?! :'( Please tell me it's satire, @AnOminous! :'(

Wait, what the fuck did you say?

"Neurodiversity"?

Maybe we should also reintroduce polio and smallpox into the population, to increase biodiversity in the world of infectious diseases.

There are people who actually think having autists, and, by extension I assume, Down's syndrome and various other mental disorders, is a good thing?

I don't think these people actually have autism. :horrifying:I had a MILD version of it growing up, and the inability to read social cues led to do much bullying that I was considering suicide at age 12. :horrifying: The 'tismtrenders imho have never actually suffered from it, or gone through years of schooling where the only friends were cats and teachers impressed by 100-averages... :( To this day it's difficult. I hate that people pretend to WANT it. Everyone who really has a horrible, socially-crippling mental condition wants to get rid of it.
These twerps can have my 'tism if they want it.

A few years ago "neurodiversity" was just an expansion on autism awareness, like "some people are different but they're people too so please don't be a dick." Is that how people are using it now? :c
