I think the confusion is because people tend to muddle the past into this rose tinted version of the 50's where everyone was wholesome and happy living in houses with white picket fences, until the dark times came and ruined it all. Let me tell you firsthand, as someone whose dad beat my ass when I was 10 because I was on newgrounds and he researched the site and found that it had porn on it, (I still remember mom yelling "They Meet and WHAT" as dad lost his shit), there was a huge split between the normals and the degenerates, at least with those born in the late 60s.
