A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Forgive the total pivot in conversation but I’d like to make a note of this.
I know that in the last few years, China’s collapsing economically and HKers want out and want to be british.

More than that….they All seem to want to live in the London suburbs. Seriously in the last five years I’ve seen at least a 20 fold increase in Chinese (mainlanders and HKers) they’re moving into all the flats near me.

I’m annoyed because they bring elderly relatives who strain the health system, but at least they are polite. Teachers say the parents are so grateful and nice. And they are underrepresented in the criminal population. There are far worse immigrants than the chinks.

Still makes me uneasy. I go out in Surrey and all I see are Chinese fresh off the boat. They bring their elderly, elderly relatives and they bring their tiny progeny too.

We may be being replaced at this rate. Labours not going to stick up for us Native Brits.

You can always tell ‘em. They always lug a wheeled box to load their shopping (rice) in. Women wear bucket hats!? (Always a mistake). Always wear trousers too short. And strange little Chinese shoes. You’ll know them when you see them.

They do commit crime BUT ONLY WITHIN THEIR ETHNIC GROUP. So go for it, I guess.

But to be serious. I’ve lived in my little suburb most of my life and as of the last five years the number of Chinks has exploded……exponentially exploded and it makes me nervous. I don’t like change.

They’re almost certainly legal. We are soft on the HKers, rightly so.. but Mainland Chinese are getting in too, as students and then never go back.

I look up to Y’all and your opinions….are we being replaced? Or is this a storm in a teacup.

The great replacement official facts

I would have thought anyone with eyes, ears and ( and in some unfortunate cases when in too close proximity ) a nose can tell we're being replaced.
My initial thoughts concern the accuracy of the data. Is this only people paying taxes and registered at an address ? I would hazard a guess if it is, this would somewhat skew the numbers compared to the reality.
Also, it doesn't take into account birth rates. Which groups are breeding at the fastest rate ? Is there data on this ? I would bet this is surpressed, if there is anyone brave enough to measure it. After a bit of digging.......

Overall birth rate decreasing ( quite alarming when our overall population has increased massively over the same period ).
White British births down by approximately 20% over the the seven years from the birthing peak total of 2012. Broadly speaking, most of the others remain constant. So the decrease in White British births is basically solely resonsible for the declining birth rate of the period.
So the conclusion I would draw is not only are White British numbers decreasing, but ethnic numbers are being consolidated by birth and increased through immigration.

I'm not sure if you guys care but in other news, the UK has begun a tech demonstrator as part of the GCAP. The demonstrator's name is Tempest and about 50% of the airframe is complete with 99% of the components coming from the UK. It'll be flying within the next 3 years.

I rent out some properties throughout the UK. I had to find new tenants for one around outer London earlier this year and the pool was largely Indian/Pakistani, then eastern european (primarily Ukrainian) and then Africans. Only a handful were from Hong Kong, about the same as English. I did notice that the Hong Kongers were extra desperate compared to other groups, they’re smart enough to know that they’re not going to pass screening so all of them either lied about something or tried to bribe me. Anecdotal, but that’s what I saw.

Who knows what the future holds but everything looks pretty good for GCAP right now. That rumour was started by the media deliberately taking a quote out of context for a misleading headline. Basically the UK is still writing a strategic defence review and a minister refused to add comment before it was out. He did say that the programme was very important and that the UK would be meeting with Japanese and Italian counterparts to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Interesting, unlike the Eurofighter/Typhoon, this multinational consortium is really driving the speed of the programme. The Japs want a suitably 6th gen by 2035 and have zero tolerance for significant delays. They have all but said that if the deadline can't be hit then they are dropping out of GCAP and going it alone.

The tech demonstrator, Tempest, while fundamentally part of the GCAP is a RAF/BAE project right now. The Conservatives already committed £12 billion to to the project with the whole thing looking to create something stupid like 20,000 jobs in total. BAE is deep in bed with Labour so I'd be shocked if they don't get pressure from them too.



The thing is going to be fucking massive.

Has anyone noticed that the majority of kids are either fat/obese or autistic? 0-8 ish years old (I've no idea how old people are) are autistic, or seem to be. They make weird noises and scream at random shit - not tantrum screaming, more like a little Britain "ahhh". Then 8-16 seems to be chubbos.

When I overhear parents talking about kids, it's always how they're autistic but high-functioning. Is this the result of being raised on Screens and/or COVID, or are kids always a little weird cause they're kids and the parents are trying to gain some IRL updoots?

Four children whose removal into foster care prompted disorder in Leeds have now been returned to stay with their extended family.
The children had been staying with other extended family members when they were taken into emergency care by police and social workers on Thursday over concerns they would be taken out of the UK.
This sparked disorder which led to a bus being torched and a police car being overturned in the suburb of Harehills.
During a Family Court hearing, Her Honour Judge HelenTrotter-Jackson said it was important everyone “focuses on the children’s welfare and taking the temperature down in this case”.


The decision was welcomed by the children’s parents, with the mother telling the BBC: “I’m glad the children are back with the family.”
Her Honour Judge Trotter-Jackson explained that the Family Court had given permission for the children to be removed because of fears they would be taken out of the UK.
Leeds Children’s Services had been told “by a third party” that family members planned to take them to Romania.
The court heard the children were all foreign nationals without settled status in the UK, and it could be difficult for them to return to Britain.
All were already subject to Family Court orders, which would make it unlawful to remove them from the UK without the permission of either the local authority or the court.
Those orders were made in April, after a baby in the family was taken to hospital with unexplained injuries.
The children were placed with other family members in the Harehills area.
Last week they were moved to live with foster carers and the court heard they had been unhappy and unsettled.
Their passports have been surrendered to the court.
Iain Hutchinson, barrister for Leeds City Council, said that over the weekend, following the disorder, there had been “extensive meetings” between key individuals in the council and family members.
He said the council's position was “the children can be returned to a family placement today”.
Mr Hutchinson said the authority recognised the children “will be overjoyed” by their return to the extended family.
The council asked that there be no celebration on the streets.

Street cleaners were at work the following day despite the disorder during the night
Catherine Mason, barrister for the Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service (Cafcass), said the guardian, a social worker employed by Cafcass who represents the children’s welfare, opposed the placement.
In this case, she had not had time to visit the home and had some additional safety concerns, the court was told.
Her Honour Judge Trotter-Jackson addressed some of those concerns and ruled that it would be in the children’s best interests to be placed with their extended family.
She said there was no guarantee the four children could stay together if they were in foster care, nor that they would be "culturally matched".
She endorsed the family placement and said her paramount concern was the welfare of the children.
Her Honour Judge Trotter-Jackson asked all present to be “mindful” of their behaviour and “put the children first”.
