The distinction, I think, is that Aaron didn't try to keep it a secret long after it was futile and absurd to do so.

There are a lot of people who can get along with addicts and abusers. That addiction and abuse sometimes only affects a narrow subset of people in their life. The cope for this is 'they were nice to me', but that rings hollow when they know what they do to others.
