'Monkey attack' on girl sparks deadly clan clashes in Libya - 20 people are dead on the fourth day of violence

Days of deadly tribal clashes have erupted in southern Libya after a pet monkey attacked a high school girl.

Abdel-Rahman Areish, the head of Sabha city hospital, told the Associated Press news agency on Sunday 20 people have been killed and 50 wounded. Reuters said at least 16 people died in four days of fighting.

Bader al-Daheli, a civil activist, said the two main tribes in the southern city of Sabha - Awlad Suleiman and Gaddadfa - are each backed by heavily armed groups.
According to residents and local reports, the latest bout of violence erupted after a monkey that belonged to a shopkeeper from the Gaddadfa tribe attacked a group of schoolgirls passing by.

The monkey pulled off a girl's headscarf and reportedly bit and scratched her, leading men from the Awlad Suleiman tribe to retaliate by killing three Gaddadfa people - as well as the monkey.

"There was an escalation on the second and third days with the use of tanks, mortars, and other heavy weapons," a resident told Reuters on condition of anonymity because of the denigrating security situation.

"There are still sporadic clashes and life is completely shut down in the areas where there has been fighting."
Like other parts of Libya, Sabha - about 660km south of Tripoli - has been periodically plagued by conflict since the uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi five years ago splintered the country into warring factions.

In the Sabha region, a hub for refugee and arms smuggling in Libya's often neglected south, militia abuses and the deterioration of living conditions have been especially acute.

The Gaddadfa and the Awlad Suleiman represent the most powerful armed factions in the region.

During the latest clashes, which took place in the city centre, initial attempts by tribal leaders to calm the fighting and arrange a ceasefire so that bodies could be recovered had failed, residents said.

"There are women and children among the wounded and some foreigners from sub-Saharan African countries among those killed due to indiscriminate shelling," said a spokesman for the Sabha Medical Centre.

Yeah but without a civil war/Invasion and said destruction of the infraestructure (lybia and iraq were one of the most developed countries in north africa/middle east) i would bet the political situation would be much more stable.

There's tonnes of stuff lying around, so Libya is one of the major hotbeds of arms trafficing because there's no control at all. So any random hick can just burst out the ol' tank if he has a problem with his neighbour.
Before 2011 Khadhafi had all the clans more or less whipped into shape, but now they're back to their time-honoured practice of blowing each other up at the slightest provocation.

There was major disapproval when he had him over for a state visit and treated him as a honoured guest, because everybody knew Khadhafi was nothing but a tyrant and terrorist, and it was widely seen as a disgrace for the French goverment to have rolled out the red carpet for him.

Turned out the reason why Sarkozy loved dear ol 'Muammar so much was because it's very likely Khadhafi made very large, very illegal donations to fund Sarkozy's successful 2007 presidential campaign.
And it's widely speculated Sarko was adamant in backing the foreign military in Libya in 2011 precisely because Khadhafi &co. were threatening to blow the lid over their little arrangement. Much easier to have evidence and people disappear in the middle of a war, after all.

I'd side with the more brutal clan and teach them more advanced tactics than "throw monkeys at them". Before they've had a chance to attach the spoils to their donkeys for the trip back to their mud villiage, crush them and assimilate them.

To be honest, part of why a lot of the old colonies are shitholes is because how we fucked up the map. Part of why the British were able to cause an Arab revolt against the Ottomans was because of this fierce tribalism. Soon as the war was over, the Allies divided up the lands in a way that made sense to us, but forced out entire groups (Kurds in Iraq, Syria, and Turkey). Also doesn't help the Libyans have not had a non autocratic government in recorded history outside of the Romans and their brief kingdom in the '50's. It went from Rome to Baghdad, to the Ottomans in the 16th century, then Italy before the British rolled in in '43.

They got their independence in 1951 forming a constitutional monarchy and forging an alliance with the UK and US...then we found out they had loads of oil. And while we can't prove the USSR had a hand in supporting Gadaffi, it was very interesting he attempted to spread some Arab socialist ideas before turning the nation into his personal playground.
