I generally agree, but I think your post highlights a massive problem Republicans/Conservatives have which is their apathy/contempt for people that have not succeeded. It's the same reason everyone hates Boomers. Boomers succeeded and then proceeded to make conditions worse for everyone else to their own benefit.

This is an attitude that makes the losing side want to kill you, because not only did you lose, but someone else made it harder to win and blames you for failing.

I think you make a great point.

What I'm talking about isn't about people trying and failing, or about taking opportunities away from people. On the contrary, I would hope we could offer more opportunities to people who are down on their luck, or struggling, or sick, or addicted. But not opportunities in the form of free gibs because your life sucks that much more than someone else's.

Society needs to recognize that a vast number of welfare recipients, homeless people, and addicts are there by their own doing, and that uplifting people means getting them to do their own footwork and helping them figure that out, not just shoving money into their hands and a roof over their head and saying "good luck" and acting surprised when they relapse back to the same old shit. We treat immigrants better than that. The systems ruling over us have already written these people off. The things they say they do to help the situation are all for optics. The numbers keep getting worse, and they keep telling us social programs are working to abate the issue. It isn't. As an immigrant you can get funding for housing, job placement, sponsorships, etc. If you've genuinely lost everything and you were born here and have always lived here, there's nothing for you except social programs that mostly focus on natives, women, and the mentally retarded: probably the 3 worst groups to expect to do better.

If someone won't help themselves, they should get nothing. I definitely don't think "fuck you, got mine." On the contrary, I think "I've got mine and I can help you get yours." The problem is that when presented with the option, in a stunning number of cases, they'd rather reject your offering and continue to live on the street and on drugs. Those are the people we need to leave behind. The ones who refuse to grow and present a tangible net-negative to the world around them.
