I'm not at all surprised. Tristan strikes me as someone who sees things in black and white, and loves and hates very strongly based on whatever his feelings tell him is right. He is too attached to Gerda now to admit that she has done something greviously wrong, because that would also reflect on his judgement - especially when she is refusing to admit any serious fault either. He doesn't want conflict with someone he's so attached to, and so he'll try and spin tales to try and manipulate the situation into working out 'fine'.

This is, of course, a pathway to disaster. Feeling strongly is okay, there's plenty of people who feel strongly. But when it interferes with truth and goodness, it goes very wrong indeed.
