Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

I decided to take a peek at how Xitter was taking Primos.
Of course they love it, not at all due to muh representashun.

Honestly I wouldn’t give it a chance on the artstyle alone. Something about it just feels so…grimy.

Derose is only...half right about the primos hate last year. There were indeed plenty who had no faith in it but the general consensus was it didn't look like it had much to offer especially since it looked like it was Destin to be la casgrandes 2.0

Most cartoon spergs were willing to at least see when it would be released to judge it as a product and not just based on the the theme...which is what people were actually pissed off about along side the broken Spanish and Terrible names.

Primos looks like it Destin to be another here today gone tommorow mediocre Disney show that STILL thinks "representation" is what resonates with audiences and not characters and writing.

In recent news, tomorrow, July 28th, we will be getting a massive Cartoon Network crossover with JellyStone titled "Crisis on Infinite Mirths". An obvious play on DC's "Crisis on Infinite Earths", this special will see the residents of JellyStone come into contact with Dexter, Dee Dee, the PPG, Mojo Jojo, Billy, Mandy and Grim.

Would assume that other CN characters will make an appearance. If I had to guess, Cow & Chicken would be an easy one given its history with Hannah Barbara. If they are ballsy, Johnny Bravo would also be an easy fit.

Edit - Confirmed characters:
  1. Johnny Bravo
  2. The Red Guy
  3. Robot Jones
  4. Samurai Jack
  5. An Adventure Time character
  6. A Regular Show character
Following this up, as we have gotten a massive list of confirms between /co/ and a few other places:
  • Dexter’s Laboratory
  • Johnny Bravo
  • Cow & Chicken
  • The PowerPuff Girls
  • Ed, Edd n’ Eddy
  • Samurai Jack
  • The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy
  • Evil Con Carne
  • What Ever Happened to Robot Jones?
  • Time Squad
  • Codename Kids Next Door
  • Camp Lazlo
  • Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi (Surprised they have the rights)
  • The Life & Times of Juniper Lee
  • My Gym Partner’s a Monkey
  • Ben 10
  • Chowder
  • The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
  • Adventure Time
  • Regular Show

Decent list, though it does make the missing heavy hitter cartoons all the more obvious. Courage, Gumball and Steven are pretty blatantly missing from CN’s top lineup. I can understand the others missing, but these are strange exclusions.

It's the setting and style. El Pueblo looks very Los Angeles (edit: Scratch that it IS Los Angeles), which is a hellzone. If you look closely at the thumbnails they emphasize how dirty everything is. The grass is dry and patchy, objects like the garbage can and house have obvious stains on them. While the characters are clean, the style feels very Loud House when the eyebrows are thick and there are just enough lines and dots to disrupt LH's Saturday morning cartoon smoothness. Look at el muchacho- they gave him a patchy mustache and a C-curve above his pelvis (breaking up his abdomen to suggest a gut when his build is already obvious.) The designers tried to be as accurate as they could to the creator's childhood while neglecting appeal. Obviously not everything has to be pretty- most of this list

  • Dexter’s Laboratory
  • Johnny Bravo
  • Cow & Chicken
  • The PowerPuff Girls
  • Ed, Edd n’ Eddy
  • Samurai Jack
  • The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy
  • Evil Con Carne
  • What Ever Happened to Robot Jones?
  • Time Squad

wouldn't sell as Barbie dolls. However there is a way to make something look "good" without making it "pretty" and much of that comes from smoothness. You need details to define a character and point to his personality, but when they take away that definition, or overemphasize certain features, it clutters up the design. It makes it "dirty." Grimy, even. I bolded many shows that had a similar focus on simple, wacky designs, and they did just that. They kept it simple.

Is it more dirty than back when the movie "Born in East L.A." with Cheech of Cheech and Chong was filmed?
