A former member of Parliament says “racism and hate” are to blame for sparking an online debate about a viral image of a man appearing to defecate at a gas station Tim Hortons parking lot in Brampton, Ont.

Raj Grewal, who was a Liberal MP for Brampton East from 2015 to 2019, said the image was photoshopped.

The image, which has been viewed eight million times since Monday night, shows a man wearing a bright orange turban bending down beside a black car, with his shorts bunched up around his knees. He appears to be holding a cup in his right hand.

It was posted on social media platform X by Harrison Faulkner, a producer at the right-wing media outlet True North.

“Brampton man just couldn’t walk the extra 15 yards to the bathroom. Mass immigration is totally working,” wrote Faulkner, including the image in his post.

Later on Monday evening, Grewal responded, saying he owned the property and that the alleged bathroom break in the parking lot “did not happen.” It was photoshopped, he said. He called on Faulkner to “do better.”

Many users on X did not believe Grewal.

“Yeah, someone just spent 10+ hours making Hollywood tier edits just to lie about this,” commented one person, sarcastically.

Faulkner replied, telling Grewal to prove the image was photoshopped.

On Wednesday, Grewal released a video that showed a man in an orange turban walking across the parking lot wearing pants. Grewal asserted the man in the video was the same as the one in the image.

“The elder man was not defecating in the open. He’s clearly wearing pants, not shorts — contrary to the photo that was initially shared. The racism and hate that’s been spread about this incident is disappointing and alarming.”

“Out of respect for the senior citizen involved we are not providing any further comment on this,” said Grewal.

The video was time-stamped, and one person in the comments pointed out: “That is surveillance video from like a week ago. This incident happened this past Monday.”

Another person claimed that the video shared by Grewal was from a different day, and shared a different video showing the alleged incident.

The images and the videos have not been independently verified.

My guess would be that the main face reflection in the car was borrowed from a real image of him in a similar position, and the people editing it used warped it a little to make it line up better with him bent over. Even the reflection in the car has some seams around it, particularly around the gap where the hood of the car meets the metal of the side he's facing. The bit near the top right corner of the headlight where his reflection is has a more harsh edge than the rest.

I wanna do more advanced image forensics on this later, but the lighting trick is typically a dead giveaway. Credit where it's due: if it's truly a fake, it's a damn good one.

You have a good point about modern post-processing on phone cameras. Fair enough.

I did watch the video. I first saw it on twitter.

It's supposedly an iOS live photo, so a jpeg frame paired with an mpeg stream. Live photos capture frames and audio both before and after the still frame jpeg. So we should be able to find that still frame in the video. The perspective in the video clip doesn't have his back line up with the corner of the car window like it does in the photo until near the end of the clip where they start to pan away. Also note the angle of his cup.

On the left is the circulating image and on the right is the closest frame I could locate in the video portion of the live photo.

The video in a live photo is always slightly zoomed in compared to its associated photo, but it doesn't tend to cut off this much around the edges, and the angle in the photo doesn't get automatically corrected. The moment in the video clip is pretty askew.
To reiterate, live photo saves a normal photo along with video of a few seconds surrounding the moment captured in the photo. Assuming there was angle correction, why would this guy have his phone perfectly upright long enough to get a few seconds of him at a proper angle but choose to capture the image as the phone is being lowered?

And one last thing: Why does he appear to be wearing pants in the 2nd part where you see him pumping gas?

The first clip shows he's much paler than his shorts, the shorts are about knee length, and the only place I can find the tones on his leg change significantly here is near the bottom of the windshield where you can see a dark patch that extends horizontally beyond his legs—probably caused by the glass. His skin tone is slightly darker in the 2nd clip, but we should still be able to tell where the fabric stops and the skin starts.

Does any of this prove anything one way or the other? Absolutely not. But there's enough that seems fucky here for me to feel hesitant to confidently claim it's real or fake. I work with visual media almost 24/7 and something just doesn't sit right with me. I would love to be wrong, since this footage would be very useful to help illustrate our decline as a country.

Edit: We get a zoomed out view around 7 seconds. He seems to be doing the same arm motions in each, so how do we have all these similar clips from different angles? Am I missing something here? Live photos don't zoom way in like that.

You can very clearly see the line of his shorts on his left leg. The right leg is obscured by the glass. The difference in skin tone is because the lighting is different. In the shitting clip, he is standing in front of the door in direct sunlight. In the one where he is pumping gas, he is in the shadow of the pump. The lighting is also different because the position of the photographer changes. With respect to the splicing, I think they just stuck whatever they had into one clip to make it easier to share.
