UK 'Major incident' after reports of stabbing and 'number of casualties' in Southport

Police have declared a "major incident" in Southport after reports of a stabbing and a "number of reported casualties".

Police said a knife had been seized and that a man had been detained but urged the public to avoid the area near Hart Street.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services are in Southport following a major incident this morning, Monday 29 July.

"At around 11.50am, we were called to a property on Hart Street to reports of a stabbing.

"There are a number of reported casualties and more details will be confirmed when possible.

"Armed police have detained a male and seized a knife. He has been taken to a police station.

"Please avoid the area while we deal with this incident. There is no wider threat to the public."

This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly.

I used to work for one of the northern police forces. While I was in there was fairly minor disorder in London (nothing to Totenham 2011 levels) and wr got "requested" to send units to help the met out. There was about a week where we had zero public order units avaliable, if it had kicked off here game over. You see the met had to bolster the diplomatic protection officers that guard MPs and their houses so we had to cover for them. Can't let the MPs feel unsafe. Also while our guys had to sleep in school gyms, town halls etc on camp beds the incident commanders that went with them were all in a 5* hotel that was designed the operations HQ.

Southport will likely have Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria, and West Yorkshire lending aid to Merseyside with possibly some others from further afield. I guarantee the met hasn't sent anything in the way of real aid just in case something happens in London that scares the MPs.

I'm not going to say this stabber was not someone who was on Prevent's watch list given how much they fail to stop such people nor am I going to believe the police if they say he expressed incel ideology when they neglect to mention that said incel viewpoints were "Islam is right about women." It would be rather unprecedented but they could call the the ministry of defence police and the civil nuclear police.

They're all also sworn as civilian police, have the powers, and have their firearms and public order tickets.

The Royal military police only technically have powers over service personnel and those the public has (like citizens arrest and any person use of force under S3 CLA) but they're helpful in these messes too.

The name seems like a common Hutu name but I might be wrong. There was an arrest warrant for someone with that surname and also reports of a mayor or village leader with that name who killed Tutsis. Also head of Rwandan Olympics and a current general maybe. Fairly common name
