I think it's a little of that, but more of the Eternal September effect. People who shouldn't be online are deeply online; being a furry is easier than ever. And you don't have to own a fursuit or even have to post pronouns; call yourself a furry and you are one. It seems like an easy community to become part of, with the caveat that then you are part of that community.
This is what happens when you give socially stunted adults a way to talk to other ppl without having to face them directly. Trannies are also like that, but unlike furries they technically aren't part of a community of their own and that's exactly why they've got an insistence to infest other communities (ruining them in the process) to socialise.
