The whole thing is such a desperate, budget operation.

It's taking place at the same time as the Edinburgh Festival, probably the biggest arts festival in Europe, but in a city 40+ miles away. It's trying to cash in on the hype of Edinburgh without having to pay the (admittedly) extortionate fees for hiring venues and hotel rooms. It's in an ugly conference centre over the river from the BBC Scotland headquarters:

The only Worldcon guest I've heard of is Fangorn, and he's a cover illustrator, not an actual author. The other "Guests of Honour" are:

- Claire Brialey and Mark Plummer (she/her and he/him, respectively) - people best known for organising other conventions.
- Ken MacLeod (he/him) - Scottish Sci-fi author who lives a 20-minute drive from the venue. Presumably they could only afford him because they didn't have to pay for his hotel.
- Nnedi Okorafor (she/her) - "Africanfuturist and Africanjujuist" writer who wrote some Black Panther comics. Presumably invited to obtain ESG money.
- Terri Windling (she/her) - Mid-tier fantasy author.

Those are the best they can manage. It really puts Fatty into perspective when a convention this low-rent can't even put him on a panel.

Isn't that Festival similar to the one in Montreal later on in the month? Pretty stupid time to put on that show and just shows how poorly planned it was. I'd say they did this because their venue would likely have been cheaper during it.

Almost certainly every real speaker is sponsored in some way - and the number of stupid NGOs that give grants for shit like this is obscene. They’ll pay for airfare (no profit here), cover her hotel room (counts toward your room block - nice), and a “speaker/sponsor fee” (pure profit/offset).

Deborah Geriatricpants of our parish family died this week, services are on Wednesday.

This common Sunday refrain got me thinking, along with the commemoration of Niggerman’s pet above, and I’m waning philosophical in the dew-covered dawn after the overnight storms.

The vast majority of the writing masses of humanity spend something like 80 years on this dead, gay Earth (1 John 2:15) and then are forgotten completely in a generation or two. I know my grandparents and some tattered remains of names and histories that come before.

And most of those people are remembered by their children with varying degrees of fondness - and even after memory fades the line remains.

Almost all of them are at peace with not being big news or big shots - some take pride in some changes they’ve made to the world, perhaps get a street named after them in the local hometown.

I don’t know that fats can deal with that. When the unfortunate time comes that he passes from this world onto final judgement (praise the Lord and let him be merciful!) - all that’s left here is a daughter who doesn’t know him, some books nobody reads (libraries don’t have copies even now), a twitter account that is unnoticed, and a thread here moved to lolcows of history.

Watching fats get confronted with his mortality will be an education, a morality play in real-time.

Like Scrooge on that fateful night; it’s not too late! He could repent! It’s theoretically possible! But Scrooge is a fairy tale; it’s quite rare in life to change the path you’re on …

It never surprises me how stupid these things are. Lovecraft wasn't fan of any race. He correctly also said that genetically niggers were inferior. Jews however weren't. to me people having to grapple with the fact Lovecraft had these beliefs is a sign that his work remains relevant and meaningful to contemporary readers-- which, as a fan, makes me happy. otherwise nobody would be bothering to discuss him or deconstruct his attitudes etc. he'd just be a forgotten writer "of his time" instead of an undisputed grand master with a challenging legacy
