I don't think his family life is bad, even though every single picture he has on fb is bathroom cosplay selfies. He's just super lonely and friendless and a world of friendship appeals to him.

This is definitely sperging, but Mr Snell's beliefs seem to fall in line with Mohism, as propagated with Mo Tzi. Mohism believes in heaven as a god/universal force and believes in universal love (which can include friendship) in order to enter into heaven. He's probably never heard of it, though.
