Ah they're trying to do everyone for violent disorder again huh? I forsee a protracted court case between the police and the insurance companies just like after the 2011 riots where the police declared it multiple instances of violent disorder rather than one instance of riot.

The only difference is the number of people taking part as a "common purpose". Violent disorder is 3 or more, riot is 12 or more.

It is all semantic as far as policing and charges go but it does have 1 major impact. If it is violent disorder the insurers are liable for the damages caused, if it is riot the police are responsible for the damages.

It took til 2016 for anyone who lost shit in the 2011 riots to get paid because it went all the way to the supreme court between insurers and the police over who had to pay the bill. If the police are charging everyone with violent disorder it's likely they're trying to pull the same thing again.

I have the following observations:

I am convinced that, had Starmer taken a de-escalatory approach and placed a greater emphasis (or indeed any emphasis at all) on calm and unity, we would not be seeing the civil unrest that is currently shattering windows and turning shop furniture to matchsticks. We might have seen it surface down the line, but not in the here and now. With a few willfully confrontational words he incited an ongoing race riot that has consumed a good part of the nation and will have lasting repercussions. He has elevated his impotence as a leader to a vulgar display of power enacted through his proxies, the police, who have been given carte blanche to disproportionately target one side, and to groups of tooled-up young Muslim men over whom he has no control and cannot acknowledge or rein-in with losing face. It seems likely that one or both of these unchecked entities will escalate to a point where they either injure or kill someone who is harder to peg as a far right sympathiser.

Starmer has blown through his honeymoon period like Russell Greer in a whorehouse with a payday loan burning a hole in his greasy pocket. Blair, for all his multitude of sins, had a vision for the country that involved its people. Starmer appears to regard the presence of the electorate as an inconvenience and, in his arrogance, makes no effort to hide his disdain. He may limp on as Prime Minister for some time and be used to push through whatever other unpopular policies Labour has hidden up its billowing polka-dot clown sleeves, but he's done and he knows it. He will never be widely admired or respected. Other world leaders will likely regard him as Trudeau 2.0, lacking any natural authority or the ability to moderate his own worst impulses.

For those whose justified concern for the wellbeing of their children, in the face of an increasingly lawless and divided society, saw them lumped-in with bona fide neo-Nazis by Starmer, this will likely be a Hillsborough moment. Irreparable generational harm has been done to the reputation of the Labour Party A lot of people will never vote for them again. Assuming the Conservatives can't get their act together, we will likely see increasing support for parties such as Reform.

I think that it is going to hard to prosecute some of the protestors. Those who were plucked at random from the crowds outside Downing Street have a good case for unlawful arrest. The burly, bearded men of the Met do seem to get a tingle in their special area from arresting strident women; a disturbing trend given that one of their own is currently serving a full-life term for the rape and murder of a Sarah Everard.
