I get the feeling that she's saying these words but the actual meaning of them is lost on her.
I think it's that she feels it in the moment (when she sees her child and knows he won't be going home with her), but she is too stunted to actually do anything about it. And after the moment has passed, she can't/won't do anything about it. The kid isn't leaving with her regardless of what she does, so she is pretty much forced to deal. I do think it is significant that that moment is the first (only?) instance of any sign of recognition and contrition. And it sure didn't come from Nick.
Aaron does seem to be stuck on Kayla, partly because I think he truly did/does care for her (although I will say some of the shit he has done is pretty unkind to her); I think that means he is Captain Save-A-Ho. He was Capt. SAH for April as well. And I do think that colors how he perceives Kayla. I mean, he is 100% correct that knowing you need to do something and having the will to do something about it are two different things. Personally, I think having your childrent removed from your home should be the ultimate motivation to get your shit together, but Kayla is one of the most useless, vapid women on the face of the planet (I don't care how ~sweet~ she is, per Aaron), so that isn't going to happen. Aaron blames Kayla's inertia on Nick (and now April as well) for gaslighting and crushing her spirit, but I think that if she was as ~strong~ as Nick claims she would tell them to fuck off and work within the system to fix her problems. So none of that is happening, because she is WEAK.
As far as the rest of it, I enjoy hearing his stories about the Qoven. I don't care if they are embellished, hearing about the inner workings of Spicer MN's spiciest crackhouse is interesting.
