I’ve often said that I think there should be a rule whereby if you’re in power you must live with your family in the most diverse and poor and crime ridden area of your country with no security. This would concentrate minds. Before any ‘that would never happen’ I’ll just remind people that the Danish ex queen used to pop down the supermarket alone for a pack of smokes and the Swedish royal kids went to a regular state kindergarten. In a high trust homogenous society that works. When I was a kid, the queen could have popped round our village with zero security and she’d have been given a cuppa (and probably as much gin as needed) and been as safe as houses. The degradation of our quality of life over the last four decades has been beyond belief.

True story. About ten years ago I walking through a part of my hometown. It was early summer. I was dressed in a mid calf length skirt, and a t shirt type top with a boat neck and 3/4 sleeves, socks, trainers and as far as a recall a light cardigan. A group of Muslim men in the full regalia spat at me and told me to dress modestly as it was a Muslim area. It was genuinely alarming.
