The bottled-water-in-theme-parks-and-festivals thing always cracks me up, since it's generally unlawful for venues to refuse (or fail) to provide access to some kind of potable water free of charge (whether it's from a kitchen tap, a drinking fountain, or whatever). Even if there's only one well-hidden out-of-the-way fountain in a venue for 50,000 people, there has to be one (in working order, serving potable water) and they can't charge for it. Even if the cunts won't let you bring in an empty bottle, you should still be able to get a little plastic cup and keep refilling it throughout the day.

they're legally mandated to but they won't put it on display, they'll just insist it's implied that if you reeeeeally need it you can go and nicely ask for a cup from the tap, but nobody is gonna give it to you unless you're actually dying of overheating

also a lot of times businesses actually train employees who deal with customers to refuse things like that, and then if they ever get in trouble they can say "oh man you should've come to me, the boss... ol johnny over here, he's just an employee he's inexpirienced, he just doesn't know he can give it to you, riiiight johhny? nobody told you, riiiiiight?"

The one particular strain of old media horder I can't respect: It's the worst format there ever was while DVDs and CD or LDs are mostly fine when not exposed to UV, vhs really is cancerous because even without taperot, the picture quality is just so insanely bad to begin with - I just can't. Vinyl on the other hand or LD not only has acceptable quality from the get go, it also looks cool, big sleeves with huge art work illustrations - it's really something you can show of but a VHS even looks disposalble and cheap. I don't get it, isn't stimming me in the least.

I'll make one exception for obscure tape horders. Legit rare bootlegs, news B rolls (but then that's mostly pro formats), that kinda stuff but then I also expect they guy to digitize and ARCHIVE, like true 8mm and 9.5 collectors

I sort of agree but I don't think it's as bad as collecting NEW SHINY things. Those tapes are already there, nobody's producing them anymore, so dude is pretty much collecting old junk because it's old junk. Weird but it's not unnecessarily consuming resources like new capeshit funkopops

Recycling all that shiny black 80s high grade plastic would be even better but since recycling is mostly a lie... I guess he's doing a net positive.

So at most he can at least show us something cool and uber autistic. Maybe something we didn't know even existed.
This is complete opposite of funko/ game/ iphone "collections" that are just a waste of resources. And I don't mean just raw materials- imagine how many manhours were spent on every aspect of producing those consoomer trophies. From designing, working on raw materials, processing those, then processing those processed materials, then production line, to every single person involved in logistics, stocking the shelves and people working on cash registers. Absolutely insane when you think about it for a second.

Laser Disc. I'm pretty sure there's old star wars on laser disc and even rips of that floating around . But it may also be somewhat cut because of the time constraints - so I'm not 100% sure on it. Not a star wars affectionardo. But you may want to look in that direction.

There's also lots of not-yet-digitized, 80s and early 90s anime ova goodness stashed away in nipponese basements. Without gay color grading or judder.
Sadly it's already getting expensive and pozzed because nostalgia tube also picked up on that years ago...

Exactly! And you can easily start vinyl "collection " (for the lack of a better word) without paying a single dime- everyone's older relatives probably have a lot of them stashed somewhere and would be happy to give them away. The only issue is a turntable but usually changing the needle (not sure if it's the proper name for that bit, but that's how it's called in my language) is all you need to do to make it work if you got it second hand like the records themselves. Super cool

Vinyl is cool and all, but growing up with tapes and now being heavily into the rather DIY-influenced Black Metal scene, I still have a strong fondness for tapes. I have both, but I try to buy tapes whenever available. There's just something about them in terms of haptic and design and history. They have a certain air of Rock'n'Roll, Punk, and DIY that vinyl simply doesn't have. I can throw a bunch of tapes in my backpack and look like an absolute tosser listening to them with my Walkman on the train. It's glorious.

I recall the story of this girl with IBS at a gap store, asked to use the bathroom and was refused even tho she had one of those medical cards that said they had to let her use the toilet.

I agree with this mostly in terms of like, actual movies. The VHS boom created some absolutley wild nonsense that went straight to vhs, as well as all the shit that gets on places like RLM's Wheel of the Worst. Training videos, doctor videos, self-help videos, people's home movies, quite literally there was a tape for it out there.

Those, I personally think, are worth rummaging through. They're also infinitely more interesting to watch imo, whether it be good or bad. I do agree that more of them should be digitized 100%. They're like little portals into the past if you find the right one.

Literally the only reason to have vhs in 2024. Owning a movie thats been released 3-4x over on dvd > bluray > 4k bluray etc. is just outright retarded. Even the absolute worst transfers are going to be 100x better than any vhs copy.

I have a bunch, they are dirt cheap. Toddler friendly media, no grubby fingerprints and scratches on disks, and can bash them around pretty well without issue. Also limits "current day" themes, I think the newest I have is around 2001, mostly 90s and late 80s kids stuff.
Also I have no problem giving the whole lot away or dumping it when no longer needed.

Maybe it's a regional thing but the casings of the tapes I disassembled as a little kid were hard as rock which surprised me compared to most toys but in hindsight even those were solid a.f. compared to nowadays - you can see it with cheap LCD TVs - back in the day kids probably died from clobbering each other with transformers or barbie convertibles.

Being fond of tapes, I also like VHS. It's not a great video format in terms of quality, sure, but the form factor and haptic is just pleasant to me. I wouldn't collect VHS tapes, but I can see why some people would do it. It's a certain history and flair.
I'd love an ADAT recorder, the old Alesis Digital Audio Tape before they reused that acronym for their digital interface. Recording digital audio on S-VHS tapes. Glorious. I got a few four track tape recorders, though, which is pretty fun.

I'm gonna powerlevel a bit, but I do collect VHS tapes as I'm quite fond of them (and grew up at the tail end of their life), and have a bunch of them. I don't do it for collection purposes, but just as a form of something to watch (aside from a few rare horror films) like the bunches of DVDs I have, but the DVD player I have struggles to play discs even with minimal scratching so its a good alternative.
People who just hoard them and think they all go for big bucks fucking suck, though.
