Turns out there is a gymnastics scandal with third place Jordan Chile. Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu allegedly placed third and while she was celebrating (heartbreaking to watch), the score was changed to put Chile instead. Some are saying the intention was to have an "all black" podium, with the winner being a Brazilian kid and Simone and Chile second and third. It makes sense because I don't see Ana doing this:

Particularly important because, a few years ago, Romania was trying to go back to be a gymnastic powerhouse as many kids weren't interested in the sport due to the bad economy and other factors. I know there is a second Romanian gymnast involved, but I don't have the info at the moment. Will look for it latlater

She may be the GOAT now, but people's fleeting interests and short attention spans likely mean another gymnast will be labeled that 4 years from now. Save the long-term accolades for those whose accomplishments are worth remembering well into the future.

There's also something to be said about the humble athletes who enjoy their championships and accomplishments while remaining down to earth about it and not blowing their own horn on a near-constant basis.

I get the sense that what happened at the last Olympics - or more accurately, the criticism she got - really got under her skin.

Everything I read about her in this Olympics comes across as arrogant, thin-skinned and painfully self-aggrandizing. She's a great athlete, yes, but she refuses to let the medals speak for themselves.

Jordan Chiles didn't steal a medal. Gymnasts are given two scores for their routines that are added together, their difficulty and execution. Each skill they do is awarded a static number of points. A gymnast then going in knows what their difficulty score *should* be, so if the score they get doesn't match, they're allowed to submit an inquiry to the judges to look over the recording of the routine.

It sucks for Ana Barbosu that Jordan went last, so when the score was initially posted it looked like she won, but it would be retarded if they didn't let you inquiry just because you're the last gymnast to perform.

The OOB violation was a completely separate gymnast from the two of them, and it's being reviewed tomorrow I believe, due to conflicting reports over whether the Romanian coaches properly put in an inquiry about it (a neutral deduction like OOB has a separate process for inquiry than a difficulty score).

I'm still a bit confused by this. So the judges watch the performance and award points based on what they see, but if the competitor isn't happy with the score they got they get the judges to watch the performance again and re-score it?

Wouldn't that mean you may as well always ask for an inquiry, unless you're in first place?

I can't help but wonder if this is for the athletes that insist they need to have their "herbal medicine" aka marijuana as part of their training and can't go without it even if it's part of the World Anti-Doping list of no-no drugs. Nevertheless, that number of exemptions sounds high enough to wonder what's going on behind the scenes.

As for the displayed score(s), it's just the nature of displaying real-time results. Something equivalent can happen in baseball, for example. A runner scores what looks like the game-winning run, only to be called out on appeal for not touching third base - resulting in that run coming off the scoreboard to reflect a now-tied game.
