The Final Fantasy Thread

Square does a lot of dumb stuff. I think Terra is just the most recognizable, you play as her first and she has a more striking design. But who knows, it's debatable.
Probably. Celes isn't really all that uniquely recognizable and if you included her in promo art or something some people might mistake her for Beatrix from FF9.

To me it's obvious that Terra and Celes are dual protagonists in FF6. There are three humans in the game that can use magic:
Terra can because she's half esper.
Celes can because she went through the magitek procedure.
Kefka can because he went through the same procedure but it was the alpha version so it scrambled his brains.

Nobody else is directly linked to Kefka like that.

How did Rebirth sell versus other PS5 games? The narrative I hear is the console lowers the install base. But I think people are underestimating sequelitis here
Spiderman 2 sold 10 mil but ff7 (nomura) fans keep telling me how it's the standard in rpgs still and a system seller. If it was on pc or Xbox it would maybe do 3 million maybe. Facts are ch 18 of remake killed.any goodwill left from old square fans and it shows. Wheres the streamers playing it? Like 16 it came.out then died like a fart.

Well the fact 16 died similarly prevents me from blaming The Remake’s overall sloppiness

1. GBA (Dawn of Souls)
2. GBA (Dawn of Souls)
3. haven't played; pixel remaster is the only localized 2D version
4. PSP
5. SNES fan translation (or GBA; it has bonus jobs and an endgame bonus dungeon but worse sound)
6. SNES (or GBA; it has an endgame bonus dungeon but worse sound)
Are there any problems with the PSX version of the 2D final fantasy games?

No, they're pretty good. The load times are an issue if you're playing on an actual disc and FF5's translation is pretty dry. Those are the only real problems.
FF5 is also one of the only PS1 games to have problems running on the PS2.

FF6 was a carbon copy of the SNES version, except some enemies had fewer name truncations. There are FMV cutscenes for the opening and ending, but you're not missing much.

The loading times could be really bad when played on original hardware. For how much you need to open the menu, a few extra seconds of a black screen each time gets really annoying. All of them are more or less obsolete, anyway.

Also, at this point, if I were to play FF1 or 2, I'd probably go with the PSP versions, mainly because it'd look nicer on my Steam Deck. I think the GBA and PSP versions are functionally the same, though?

16 was straight dog shit compared to 7 R2. Legit failed to even be a good DMC clone. Felt like another game that they slapped a number on. It's to the point I hear rumors they will cut out 16 as much as possible in future crossovers.

I legitimately think the low install doesn't help. Remake apparently got a lot of purchases in the lead up to rebirth. I think a lot of diehards and some newbies will be more interested if they stick the landing with part 3.

ff7 will always be the best everything else all goes downhill from here imo.
This is what I've always been saying but people will always argue that FF peaked at either VI or X depending on who you ask.

People who think Final Fantasy peaked at VI are just reddit neckbeards who think they're hipsters for saying that. I've always been under the impression that people who think VI was the best FF are jealous that VII always had the huge fanbase and VI never did.

FFVII unfortunately has the "Nirvana effect" in that it's popularity also attracts a shit ton of tourists who have clearly never played any other FF game, or JRPG for that matter beside VII. Case in point I met this girl way back when I was in school who had a Cloud Strife sticker on her car despite the fact that she had never even played the game (this was still a few years before the Remake came out)

Which is wild because FF7’s fanbase is awful. Not at Voltron or Steven Universe tier but definitely more in that direction than people realize.

16 turned me off by the combat alone, it's just the same terrible style as 15 was. Call me if they ever make an oldschool ATB FF game again.
Also the setting didn't excite me either.

XVI launched in a better state than the previous three mainline Final Fantasies. It wasn't a perfect game, but to call it "an absolute garbage heap top-to-bottom" sounds ridiculously jaded.
It may not be a trash heap but there is absolutely nothing "Final Fantasy" about XVI aside from the setting and some classic monsters/summons/chocobos. The game is so far removed from what makes a FF game FF that it have just been called anything else.
