I don't know how guilty I am of making an appeal to tradition or the past, but the quote above exemplifies why I think it is a bad idea; if anything, the age of consent should be raised to 25, when biological brain development reaches true adulthood. We live long enough on average that this makes all the sense in the world.

I genuinely don't understand how people can enjoy American style coffee, ie real coffee with an appalling excess of water. Essentially thinning out espresso with water in stead of milk is revolting IMO, but more power to you if you can tolerate the product of something like a drip system, press or kettle, since you have more options than I do. I don't get it, but I do wish I liked it as well.
AKA burnt coffee. The darker the roast, the more caffeine is literally burnt out of it, the more bitter the taste, the lower grade beans they can get past you because they're burnt and you can't tell one way or the other. If you need the caffeine and/or hate the bitter taste, it's breakfast roast or bust. If you like the bitter taste and don't want much of a boost, then yes, dark roast will be perfect for you.
When I turned 18 I resolved to lose weight and part of that was going to the gym literally every day. I forced myself to go for 2 months straight because I was told that doing something for 2 months forms a habit. I never enjoyed it and so I stopped.
The best habits are the easiest to start and continue. I cannot recommend enough that you get a pair of pedals to put under your desk to do gentle, low effort cardio that requires no concentration while you do whatever the hell you're up to at your desk. What I like most about the French Press is the fact that it doesn't filter out the oils which preserves the mouthfeel of the coffee. I drink it straight up, about 19oz at a time.

I get what your saying about dark roasts and the risk of low quality beans but once you find a reputable brand of quality beans the flavor profile of dark roast expands dramatically.
The brand I like is called Storm Mountain and I take 1 bag ea of their Columbia Bambucco and Rock the Boat beans then combine them in a 1gal zip lock bag.
The resulting coffee has a deep dark chocolate flavor to it. Delicious.
