I think people rather into their hobbies/interests just tend to latch onto terminology and use it as transferable concepts even if it doesn't exactly make sense. I've seen it with people doing it with other games/game genres, or other interests like sports, books, or movies (ex. NFL, NBA, Marvel, Harry Potter).
