SEOUL, Aug 14 (Reuters) - North Korea will resume international tourism to its northeastern city of Samjiyon in December, and possibly the rest of the country, tour companies said on Wednesday.
The move is a sign that the reclusive country is readying to reopen borders to bigger groups of foreign tourists after years of strict COVID border controls.
"We have received confirmation from our local partner that tourism to Samjiyon and likely the rest of the country will officially resume in December 2024," the Beijing-based Koryo Tours said on its website.

International flights in and out of North Korea resumed last year and a small group of Russian tourists flew to North Korea for a private tour in February. Top foreign officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin in June, have been visiting the country.
But North Korea has not been fully open to international tourists since 2020.
"Having waited for over four years to make this announcement, Koryo Tours is very excited for the opening of North Korean tourism once again," the firm said, adding its local partner would confirm itineraries and dates in coming weeks.

North Korea has been building what it called a "socialist utopia"in Samjiyon, a city near the Chinese border, and "a model of highly-civilised mountain city" with new apartments, hotels, a ski resort and commercial, cultural and medical facilities.
Leader Kim Jong Un in July sacked or demoted some senior officials for their "irresponsible" handling of his flagship Samjiyon project.
Another travel agency, KTG Tours, also announced that tourists would be able to go to Samjiyon from this winter.

I've seen those light pollution maps. If they were smart they'd play up their lack of development as a selling point.
Stop trying to chase the rest of the world, Kimmy. Embrace the dark skies and undeveloped nature. Promote North Korea as a giant nature preserve.
NGL if Pyongyang offered a dark sky tour, I'd seriously consider it. Everywhere you can see the stars properly in the rest of the world is a fucking desert.

It's kind of a shame that PUA sex tourist videos aren't as widespread on Youtube anymore because North Korea would be the next top destination for them. About 7 years ago I was obsessed with watching them, fugly charlatans would go to shitholes together with a paypig they fleeced for their "PUA seminar." They would then pretend that the purchased woman actually wasn't purchased at all and he got her with his eye contact only rapid escalation pick-up or whatever the fuck. The sex tourists in Cuba would get women to sleep with them by just giving them branded clothes from America :story:

The giant nature reserve is not doing too hot with rampant deforestation, sewage and industrial effluent in surface water, and the unregulated dumping of solid waste. It's basically a less cool Soviet Union.

You know, ever since that Vice documentary on the tour to North Korea as well as that comic done by Guy De Lisle, this project has potential. Though the risk of this is going to be letting in more westoid ideas into your territory.

Considering that the reason why the Norks haven't suffered like the South (despite the famines), is because they've kept westoid bullshit out.

Just like with the Soviet Union, it depends on the area. Pyongyang is obviously a dump, but Yalu and Paektu are beautiful. I have also heard that Raseon is a rather nice city where a lot of the locals speak russian, so the bilinguals here could try and visit it
