9/11 was to my knowledge the first time terrorists hijacked planes with the express purpose of using them as guided missiles.
There was a lot of hijackings in the 70's and early 80's but they were usually for the purpose of taking hostages.
The Israelis rescue of hostages from Uganda was one of the more notable ones.
I don't recall anyone hijacking commercial airliners to use as missiles before 9/11, thats one of the reasons it was so devastating, it was something that hadn't really been considered before.
