According to the male variability hypothesis there actually are more male geniuses, but also more male retards. It’s most likely a result of males having non-matching chromosomes, which allows for more varied genetic combinations.

I have to respectfully disagree. I'm not an expert and haven't researched that subject (the bell curve stuff), so you may be right about that, but that doesn't have anything to do with why female-specific chess tournaments and rankings exist. There being more male geniuses doesn't mean there aren't any female ones, but it is known that female geniuses are much less likely to be identified, nurtured, etc. the way male geniuses are. And as I said, there is the serious issue of harassment and abuse female chess players face from male ones. And so on.

I don't want to drag this out as it's only tangentially relevant, but just wanted to point that out since it looked like multiple people were misunderstanding my point.

Culture does affect how conditions manifest. Schizophrenia exists in both the US and India, but in American patients the delusions are much more aggressive. In Indian patients the delusions are often friendly and even adopt the appearance of family members, which is an atypical presentation in the west. So when someone is predisposed to being unable to adequately handle and address stress, it isn't a leap to believe it will develop into some form of disordered behavior. It could be OCD rather than an eating disorder, but it expresses as anorexia more commonly in first world countries.

Where we go wrong is not trying to better understand and treat the root cause of why so many people under stress adopt whatever culture-bound illness is known to them; whether that's anorexia, hysteria, troonism, etc., as well as how we can help them manage that stress better so they stop their self-destructive behavior.

Instead, what we do is treat the symptoms of a specific manifestation of a culture bound disorder. So there are gender clinics, special clinics for anorexia patients, and special masseuses for hysteria patients. But it's all kind of missing the point.

So just an hour ago, I told my wife I’m transgender. It took a lot for me to do it, and I’m proud that I was able to finally be honest with her.

She didn’t take it badly at all—she wants to support me in any way she can. But, like I’ve seen in other posts here, she’s grieving the future she had envisioned for us. It’s heartbreaking to see her struggle with this.

She told me that we will be seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist because she doesn’t want to raise our two sons on her own, but she also doesn’t want to stop me from becoming who I should be. She cried for a good hour on my shoulder, and it was one of the hardest moments of my life.

I knew that telling her would mean my life would change, but now that it has, it’s terrifying to realize there’s no going back. I’m scared. I don’t want to lose her, but she isn’t attracted to women, and I get that.

I did foresee this as an issue, but I was hoping she would be accepting. We both want to stay together, but at the same time, we don’t want to put pressure on each other to be someone we’re not.

I’m not sure what’s next for us, and I’m feeling really lost right now. Has anyone who has been through this successfully have any advice for me/us?

No, it's not. Classical music is a great example. Mozart's sister Maria was also a musical prodigy, but her father forced her to stop performing at the age of 18. Felix Mendelssohn's sister Fanny was also a composer and reportedly, potentially an even more skilled pianist than her brother, but was also held back from doing more by her father. Fanny does have a few hundred compositions to her name, but given how prolific she was reported to be who knows how many hundreds more were claimed by her brother (same with Maria* Mozart. Full name Maria Anna Mozart, hence the silly typo). Bach's second wife Anna was a talented singer in her own right, transcribed much of his music, and may have even composed some it herself, but again, forgotten to most in favor of the "lone male genius" framing. A bit silly to pretend like centuries of patriarchy have had no effect on the ability of women to freely be geniuses. Having a spouse who is expected to be subservient to you and take care of you and your home in your stead leaves an awful lot of time for thinking.

I'm thrilled to have an update on "bag full of Nintendo" hon. Learning he was at a titty bar where he was formerly scorned from employment for being a troon makes it all even stupider. I thought this all took place at a regular bar. A Latvian IM has been suspended by FIDE for 5 years because, for at least a decade, he has been sending letters to female chess players (including several who were underage at the time, containing porn and used condoms.

The Latvian and Russian (most of the women were from there) police both declined to do anything about this with the justification that this somehow wasn't a crime
